It's more of a security decision, to keep things safe on your phone.
An API is like a door with a lock. It doesn't matter what type of lock you have, it's hackable given time and resources. With the API, there is no door. Much more difficult to hack and you'd have to get around it through other methods.

You are of course still allowed to copy your own texts, just you have to do each chat manually from the hub.

This wouldn't be so bad if BlackBerry was going to start providing a way to do selective backups and restores in Link in the future, the way you could with the legacy phones and the old Desktop Manager.

Although, I just tried SMS Backup that I got some time ago, when still on 10.2, and it worked just fine on 10.3.1.1151.

No problems yet. At least when doing the initial backup. It pulled all 2100-some-odd messages.

Another BlackBerry decision that reaffirm me to abandon bb10.

I was able to backup from 1016 and restore to 1151 without issue. So for now the api is still open

Edit: WITH a third party app.

I don't know what is your source of information here but seen that it could form a risk, according to some, then I wish that BlackBerry will offer a built in solution for backing up conversations and to extend it to include other messaging e.g. BBM
