Im one of those 1.6 billion and I can tell you that it doesn't even come close to being important to me. If I could never used Facebook on BB10 it would not be enough to even think about changing phones.

Or, like me, most family and friends are over 4000 km's away so having Facebook is an easy way to share my adventures and keep in touch. The web version, although not ideal, does suit my needs.

Well, that is a very debatable assertion.

The security one can expect from email is highly variable. Facebook can be variable as well, but for the most part it is under the control of the user.

Yes, but I'm not going to mass email all my cousins, friends, and acquaintances and expect the same in return. It's convenient. Sure, many spend far too much time on there and share far too much personal information, but in my use case, and I'm sure many others, it is a form of keeping in touch.

There are two native apps for Facebook : Face10 and Facebox.

The old native app from BlackBerry still works for messages.

And their lack of understanding the security features available on Facebook makes email more secure? No. I happen to agree with your premise that Facebook is not a vital application for many people, not even all daily users. But using bogus arguments like email is more secure does nothing to strengthen your position.

Email was never meant to be secure and is impossible to secure without securing the entire infrastructure that carries it, especially if you include users who don't understand the available security features. S/Mime, PGP and GPG all have significant weaknesses if keys are not handled properly. Unless you have IT support managing the keys, the uses are doing it. Anyone who can't understand Facebook security management isn't likely to understand key management.

Email, especially when broadcast to many recipients is handled by many servers. Not all of those servers will be managed by people who are knowledgeable or even care about security. A chain is only as strong as the weakest link. If only one of the email servers involved is compromised and the users don't use the blind carbon copy feature, the email and all the addresses are compromised.

Lol can't even remember when was the last time I sent an email to friends/relatives. It's usually FB Messenger, WhatsApp, or old school SMS now. Email is mainly for my work colleagues.

The lack of a native Facebook app (and other apps important/not so important to users) represents the slow death of the OS. Those with a death grip on the soon to be dead OS device of course don't think ANY app is important.
