Someone on CB Suggested that in 10.3.3 update the Android Runtime would be removed. Having read LOADS of threads I don't want to start a debate on what may or may not happen, but I am curious:

If this did come to pass, would this mean that android apps, even ones already installed, would no longer run on current blackberry devices?

Or would it just mean I couldn't install any new ones?

In other words, if the android runtime on a BlackBerry device was removed by an update, if I was reliant upon an android app, in theory I would have to go out and get an android phone to use it?

Or have I not understood this right?

Yes. IF the runtime were to be removed from the current OS in a future update, none of the Android apps you might have installed now would work anymore.

This would include the many BlackBerry World apps that are actually android ports. They rely on the runtime to work too.

I'm more curious why 10.3.3 so secret?
Why not even a single build spotted its existence..

Thanks for the replies. I have noticed loads of people on these forums use two phones...many of these seem to have blackberry for "work " and something else for "play". An interesting culture. I have never really done that, despite having lots of different phones littered around the house. I do wonder if the alleged Venice android slider is attempting to be that rare beast that can cover both worlds?

I find that the "play" stuff is handled way better with a tablet anyway - I don't like to be bombarded with suggestions on which brand of artisan chocolate chip muffins best expresses my personal lifestyle choice while I am writing.

So I guess I will have to learn how to live without certain apps. Not a big deal.

People saying the runtime will be removed are silly, I've said before and I'll say it again, they advertise Android Apps, there are Android Apps in BBW, they advertise Amazon App Store and now even Advertising Amazon App store in BBW, I highly doubt it will go anywhere.

Regarding the mysterious 10.3.3, it's been mentioned before it could be on a different server that we aren't scanning or just still be in a heavily internal stage.

Yes, all speculation, but you can understand the frustration of many people who see users of certain other platforms speculating on what new features or improvements they will get, what enhancements and so on, as opposed to speculating on whether doom is at hand. I can understand when people are considering if they should buy a current flagship or not, unsure for how long it will be supported. A current flagship.

I have stayed, because I love bb10, and like a company that could create something like the Passport. I hope to own one soon. F**k it, you live but once, and for a short time only.

I have a Z10, two Z30s, just got a Leap on Saturday, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a red Passport. If they stop development of BB10 then I'll have enough BB10 phones to last me a long time. If they remove the runtime from 10.3.3 then I just won't update to it. I'm happy with Z30STA100-5/10.3.2.2339. The chances of me getting an Android phone are slim to none.

My plan, sort of. I Am going to get the Passport soon, and will simply use it until it no longer turns on. I am doing a trial run by uninstalling my android apps. To be honest, I don't miss the four of them.

It is not going to remove android runtime. Since they have already made a contract with Amazon apps store.

The beauty of the passport is that there is nothing in the market that can even compare to it.
I don't know what I'd do when the slider comes out. I don't see it as an upgrade to the passport obviously.
Sincerely doubt the runtime would be uninstalled. I think if anything they would just stop updating it and that's it
