Now that you've got their attention, ask them if they're planning to untie themselves from carrier approval.

The out is "subject to carrier approval".... as long as BB launches update through carriers... these posts are pointless as you have no control over carriers release dates and they tend to be secretive... heck .. Passport has be out for a number of months.... when will it be released on ATT????? who knows..... everyone just needs to get a healthy dose of patience... and happily work away on your BB,,,,,

For once, it's actually nice to live in Canada. I think most of the Big 3 release the latest OS shortly after it becomes "available".

I have an unlocked device. I've even owned another unlocked BlackBerry before this one, and I've never gotten updates.

Yes, but in the UK for example, Vodafone were always the first carrier to release updates and I am on EE. Therefore, on an unlocked phone I could pop in a PAYG Vodafone SIM card and it would update and then I just put my EE SIM back in.

For Fido (Canadian carrier. Rogers' subsidiary), 10.3.1 will come at late February/early March. Still quite a while.

On an unlocked and unbranded device from the factory, itshould update regardless of the sim you put in. As the update is pushed directly due to not needing to be carrier specific.

Nope, it does not. The system ties it to the carrier SIM used. You can however sometimes swap SIM's and get it on a carrier that has already released it.

Because updates are subjected to the sim it has, not matter if it's unlocked or not

    Wrong,
It depends on the sim you have in it, it not matter it's unlocked or not.

correct me if im wrong but if the carrier has not released a update but BB have directly, can you or can you not, take the sim out, reboot the phone, then check for updates without the sim in and you'll recieve the one from BB?

So what happens if I bought the phone out right and my carrier doesnt even sell the device? It is unlikely they will spend time to approve any updates. I still expect to get them.

Are you telling me that I wont?

I don't think the update depends on carrier for unlocked phone. I used an unlocked Q10 in China where BlackBerry never released officially.

As is said above, it does. My Q10 is unlocked but in the past I've had to borrow a Telenor SIM to get updated because TDC are so slow (and useless in general).
