I have just come across "BB10 / PlayBook App Manager" Chrome extension. Is there anyone here who has any experience using it?

    https://www.gridbook.org/pb-app-mgr/

The extension was originally available for both Chrome and Firefox browsers, but Firefox support seems to have been dropped after Mozilla switched-over to WebExtension API in v57 (in November of 2017). I have Ubuntu Linux v14.04 on one of my computers and tested "BB10 / PlayBook App Manager" running in Chromium v65. There were no problems connecting to BB Classic. I am not sure, however, if it is still safe to use the extension to install apps from bar files:

I have run into some problems with snapd trying to install Chromium v85 on Ubuntu v20.04 and couldn't test the extension in more modern OS environment. The extension runs out-of-the box on Linux, there is no need to install any extra drivers (like with DBBT on Windows).

Doesn't Sachesi, still available on GitHub, have a native Linux version?

DBBT is a great tool but it only runs on Windows. And it depends on BB Device Manager drivers (which are bundled in BB Link installer). The good news is that they can be installed separately and do not require BBID:

With BB10 / PlayBook App Manager you don't need to worry about any extra drivers. The tool is also OS independent and can run on Windows, MAC, Linux (and probably on BSD, Solaris/OpenIndiana, etc). I was surprised how fast it connected to my BB Classic. I just entered the Classic's password and was instantly connected. With DBBT there is always some delay before PC-to-BB connection kicks in. Same thing happens when you try to connect BB device to BB Link.

I can see that Sachesi has a separate Linux version available but I didn't have time to try it out yet.

LocalBar2 also used to work for sideloading onto Playbook, with the help of a BB10 device or another Playbook.

I used that Chrome extension fairly extensively back before we had Sachesi and DBBT.

    Works today as well.

Just need to remember that you must put the phone in developer mode and plug in the phone's IP address so the extension can connect.

But, it can connect over USB or Wi-Fi if the computer and phone are on the same network.

It seems the developer of LocalBar had eventually come up with a version that could sideload either way between BB10 device and a Playbook. I'm just not sure if it would work with the Classic because the thread is from 2013:

Thanks for confirmation. I'm primarily a Linux user. This might be easier that fooling around with deb files and worrying about dependencies when installing on a latest distro (I suspect that's how you install Sachesi on Linux, but I might be wrong).

You are correct. Much easier and faster to install via the extension if you are a Linux user. I've used all the methods available and use the Chrome extension on the (now) rare occasions I want to try a bar when on my Linux machine.

LocalBar2 definitely happened, and worked. I used it many times. I have a copy of the .bar file for it somewhere. The giraffe head icon and all still also on my Playbook. I don't precisely remember now if it was only for actually installing .bar files onto the Playbook (ie: residing on a Playbook and/or a BB10 device, for the purpose of sideload installing onto a Playbook), or if it could also be used for sideload installing .bar files onto a BB10 device.

There is still a LocalBar2 website:

Think @KermEd released LocalBar2, and he has been around recently...

Think it started out for the PlayBook and then included BB10, or the newer version did. I thought it stopped working...

Yes, actually yohanes helped me with localbar2 or 3 or something

Localbar1 was written in flash, which BlackBerry removed from BB10. Yohanes sent me his plugin so I could wrap it in a cascades application (if I remember correctly) and made LocalBar2? So hard to remember the exact namings.

From there we also created the OSBB AppWorld, which let people browse and download unofficial BAR files and install them on device. I made that working with Justin (jtokarchuk) after we worked on the retroarch port to BB10.

I have the bar files for those if anyone needs them.

But a patch later BlackBerry closed the loophole we used for installing - and so now it doesn't work at all.

I had hoped to create another localbar but after the chrome plugin became a thing and BB10 could run APKs it became a bit of an obsolete idea...

Oh yeah haha and this is when I decided to program in a small RPG Quest game where it would play an RPG game in the background if you left it running.

    Definitely my style of humour

Update #1: actually it looks like self install is what they blocked, and installing from another BB10 device on a local network is still working?
