Is it possible to create a backup either in the cloud or on the computer of the entire device WITHOUT using BB Link?
Sort of like BB Protect would do.
Also, a way to sync my contacts and calendar with Outlook or another pim. This might nedd some creative thinking.
    thx
p.s. i did see this in another thread but that one died

You can sync contacts and calendars with a web service and also sync that with outlook.
As far as backing up app data and phone settings, no, you'll need a computer.

LINK is not required - Sachesi & Darcy's Tools will do backup, but it follows the same format. Then save those files to any of the Cloud Storage programs out there - SkyDrive, DropBox..... (Box limites your file sizes, unless you pay for their service). But if you mean a Backup and Restore from the device directly to a cloud location, that I haven't seen.

For syncing I use Outlook.com for my free email account - it allows two way syncing. So I can use Outlook the program on my desktop or laptop and the same info - Calendar, Contact, Email and Task are all there.

For my work account, it is an Active Sync account so the same applies.

could you send a link for Sachesi & Darcy's Tools since i cant find it on google or bb world. thx

I should have been more clear in my question.
Since I donot want to give my son the device password he cant connect to BB Link.
So he cant sync with Outlook and he can't make backups.
I found Fire Chest that backs up to Dropbox. Slow but does the job.
Now I just need to figure out how to sync Outlook calendar and contacts.
I'll try the Outlook.com sync and see how it goes.
What do you mean by"Active Sync account"?
    thx

Sachesi will still require the device password to back it up.
