AFAIK BlackBerry Link is the only way to backup apps. And Link seems to be quite bad at it as I've understood from others. In my case it constantly hangs at about 11%, always when backing up "BlackBerry runtime". I've tried different computers (win7) on different levels of update, but no change. It worked on my old Q10, but never on my Passport. I don't know if the Q10 would work today 'cause I don't own it anymore.

Has someone found a way to make link work , identified the problem or something? Is there other ways to backup apps?

Just do a selective backup of the apps you want to archive.

    Yes.

Assuming of course that the BBID infrastructure continues to exist after Dec 2019.

Thanks @conite.I have tried this setting several times, but overlooked the possibility to uncheck e.g. BlackBerry runtime and system applications. However, it doesn't work anyway. Just hangs on another point, now 22%. So unfortunately it's status quo.

You can also backup or restore apps using Sachesi. BBID not required but you first have to put the phone in development mode.

Unfortunately the same behaviour - it hangs at 12% with no disk activity. Strange!
