Okay let's say that the app gap is now closed, but what will happen if Google decides to drop dalvik for future android releases? Will bb10+ incorporate googles new runtime then, or will another app gap be created?

since the apps generally run on both runtimes it might not matter too much. it might for future updates down the road but not in the near future

I really can't find anything about the new runtimes licensing. If it stays open source (which right now I believe it will be since android itself is open sourced) bb will still be able to use the runtime, but a closed source runtime will ruin the ability for all future android side loads...

So far ART is meant to ingest exactly the same code that the dalvik rt runs now. As long as that is true, I really don't see any issue for the BB runtime.

BB may or may not be able to adopt it in their runtime, but even if they don't apps are meant to work on both.

Why can't BlackBerry cache compiled APKs like ART does, right now?

BB10's Android runtime could use the speed boost *badly*.

Example: PicsArt is an amazing app, but loading pictures is very slow, and swiping left on the main screen often lags and stutters like there is no tomorrow.

In theory BB, yes, could make their own ART. I think that may be a bit over their heads. Have they built anything like that before?

I'm sure that bb will make overall improvements to whatever native runtime they use, but that is separate from the dalvic machine. I not sure, so hopefully someone in here will correct me on this.
The dalvic rt in bb is only used on BBC to luanch /install/run android apps, nothing else.

Right now dalvik is open sourced, but I am not certain if art will br under the same type of licensing.
If Google decides to implement new closed source licensing for art then there will no longer be any side loading of the files legally at least.

Well after searching aosp it looks like ART is open source, so it can be implemented in future Bob is builds.

Well yeah, it would have to be something more than Dalvik since Dalvik doesn't do this (if it did, there would be less of a reason for ART).

I can't comment on whether BlackBerry have the skill to implement that, however I'd be surprised if they didn't given their proximity to top world CS schools like Waterloo and the University of Toronto (U of T is ranked in the top 20 (and often top 10) CS schools in the world by most rankings if I'm not mistaken).

Well looks like ART is open source, so this may be moot anyhow.
