You're on what's considered a home Wi-Fi, such as Fios for VZW or at&t which has a similar open Wi-Fi service for customers.
It's a Microcell. I have one at my house because cell service sucks in a one block radius around my house. A Microcell (in my case, for Verizon) is basically a mini cell tower that gas about a one block radius that provides cell phones in that small area a better cellphone signal. The Microcell connects to your router and sends your cell phone call/data to the carriers (Verizon's) servers through your Internet connection.
With Verizon's, any Verizon cell nearby will connect to the Microcell. However, with AT&T's version, only white listed cell phones will connect. You most likely connected to a Verizon Microcell. Also, you will hear a little beep when you make a phone call while connected to one of these. It's just to let you know that you are connected.
BTW, I just realized that Verizon's is called a "Network Extender" and AT&T's is called a Microcell.
Anyways, I hope this helps.
FYI, iPhone's don't show whether it is connected to one of these extenders. Mark down another very minor (but important to some users) win for BlackBerry! (goes on the same list as shift+backspace to delete, long press to capitalize a letter, etc...)

iPhones (and probably other types of phones) show the appropriate indicator based on the carrier's service profile. For example, iPhone status bar shows "M-Cell" indicator when connected to a microcell. This picture is from a 2010 review, showing the status bar when connected to a microcell, then connected to a regular cell tower.FYI, iPhone's don't show whether it is connected to one of these extenders. Mark down another very minor (but important to some users) win for BlackBerry!
