I'm not sure why having 4.3 matters. Most Android developers at least at the moment aren't going to make an app for a version that most devices can't handle/wont be upgraded to. With 4.2.2 they have a pretty safe bet that a lot of people will be able to use their application.

    BlackBerry Z10 | Verizon | 10.2.0.1371 | In Squircle We Trust
Google recommends developing for version 2.3 for compatibility reasons. An app for 3.0 can target about 60% of Android phones I believe. I doubt there are many (if any) apps that are 4.3 only.

We have the 4.2.2 runtime. It is not full blown android but it certainly is 4.2.2

More important that the runtime include all the missing calls and APIs. Blue tooth support, maps, voice control, graphics hardware acceleration etc all still missing.

And bringing back the Squircle would make it complete.

I care about Android Runtime now, because there are lots of apps missing for BB10, therefore we have to use the Runtime. But I just hope when 4.4 or 5.0 roll out, we already have those apps we've been waiting for, so the Runtime should feel like a bonus of the platform. And also hope we get our Squircle back!!!

Android platform is known for their slow software adaptation, due to brand specific updates. This 4.4 won't reach any device (unless nexus and Google play version) until a few months after it's announced. Heck, even some android flagships right now will stuck either on 4.2/4.3. So I don't see why BlackBerry should update their runtime to this 4.4, at least until 6-9 months from now.

I don't think Google Play Edition devices get the updates right away. It's mostly vanilla Android, but still has some software from the manufacturers.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and I understand everything much better. Just one question though, wouldn't it be easier and nice if we could easily update our runtime OTA? I don't think it should really come with an OS update to do that? I just think BlackBerry should consider doing this. (my opinion)

One other thing I would want to have the "Squarcle" or whatever it's called back. Isn't there any way?

When an ota OS update happens your runtime is updated so I don't know, maybe I'm missing your point there.

    And no

I understand, but my question still remains unanswered.
One more time, if BlackBerry Z30/A10 (as known) comes with the Android runtime version 4.2, when this 4.4 updates come out (whether it takes a year or a month) will we be able to update our runtime?

Posted via CB10 app on my Z10 Stl100-1 on 10.2.0.1047
    Straigth up answer: No.

Keep in mind that we are not using android powered devices, so just because a new android version is up, it doesn't mean we can go and download it.

It will be up to BlackBerry to update the Android Runtime, pack it with an OS update and push it to our devices.

If we were running dual boot BB10/Android, then yes, you would be able to do OTA update of one OS while the other sits still. But this is not the case. Think of the runtime as any other app by BlackBerry.

People make fun of the names that android uses for their OS but the names are fun to people and they get people interested in it. I love blackberry and could careless what they name anything, but to the average highschooler what's fun about Z10 and Q10 and 10.1 OS
