    I've used this extensively, along with BBM protected text messages. Any Linux programs that would be a suitable alternative either on a laptop or ubuntu phone platform?

    Skype - Microsoft, not private.
    Whatsapp - Facebook, not private.
    BBM - no cross platform support, and with BB10 getting sidelined it won't be long before that translates into no suppory.

    Suggestions?

    You can check into Tango. Its free and allows video chat, but privacy may be an issue with it.

    Until BB released BBM video for other platforms other than BB, then you're a bit out of luck at the moment.
