    Am I missing something? I see no option in Contacts to scan a QR code and Smart Tags does not appear to link QR codes to contacts?

    Have you tried to scan the code using the bar code scanner in BB World?

    I think the data in a QR Code can be any kind of data, like a link to a website or a vcf file ("virtual card file") which is the standard format for contact info, or a link to a vcf file online.

    Yes but it doesn't do anything in this case. In any case Smart Tags should be the standard BB app for QR codes, etc. but it's not handling the QR code in this case the way I intend it - to add it to Contacts.
