Yeah, blackberry already announced that they will EOL BB10 by the end of 2019. Perhaps you missed that. It's not the death of bb as a whole, but that seems to be what you are implying. WhatsApp still works on Android, including bb devices powered by Android.

The last BB10 device was released almost three years ago and the last official update was a year ago. Blackberry just announced BB10 will end of life and they're giving another two years before they pull the plug. For those who need apps that don't function on BB10, you have had and are still being given plenty of time to move to another OS. And this isn't to spark a debate about whether or not BB10 is still a viable OS. It's about the fact that people who need apps really should be moving to a different OS because BB10 doesn't have the app support they need.

This being the most relevant reply imo. Get the apk, the ART is there to be used. No reason to dump BB10 because this I would say.

The service will also be crippled after 2019. There's no guarantee the device will still be able to be used for even a phone call after that.

Yeah if WhatsApp is the only app you need on BB10 then you may as well sideload the APK and continue using it for a bit longer. It's not like the full Hub experience from the native app is replicated on other platforms anyway.

The service will also be crippled after 2019. There's no guarantee the device will still be able to be used for even a phone call after that.
Phone calls will likely still work on BB10 after the BB World closure, it's apps, IAP's, push notifications, etc that are kinda unknown at the moment.

It might work for a day or two while the timer globally expires but unless it's extended with a BB World update it will stop working regardless. The same thing happened to users who didn't update the app after the last extension this summer.

It must be a typo, the source they link to says December 31, 2017 and the dev had already posted here earlier this month that no more extensions are planned. When a WhatsApp build expires (even on iOS and Android) all use and functionality gets locked out until the app is updated.

I have done the switch to the android version on BB10 and for the most part it is very good. There's another thread here where dKonigsberg explains how to properly get your items over from BB to Android with the correct folder placement. Also when you restore the backup file, don't panic when you only see your groups and no chats listed. They are still there, they just don't show up in the list. You have to find the person you want talk to and the history will come up.

Things I don't like is the inability to save media to external storage, and when looking for media between you and a contact it will only look at the internal storage. Also, searching for pictures in the app to send. It can find the pictures from the SD card to move, but not save there. The BB10 version was so much better with this .

EDIT: I have to take some of the above back. I see that since the android folder is also created on the sdcard, it saves copies of the media there as well (pictures, backups, etc). I'm guessing there isn't a way to stop this?

I just read an article on a German tech news site about the end of support for WhatsApp on BB OS10. It says (roughly translated), that WhatsApp won't stop working on January 1st! Existing OS10 users can go on using WhatsApp!

However new features won't be implemented for OS 10, you can't register new accounts and can't verify your account again. I don't really know what the last one means, but I guess it's something like reinstalling WhatsApp.
Question is: Do you have to verify WhatsApp, if you reload a backup with LINK? If not, then I guess this is no big deal except for users that change their sim card.

I feel like CrackBerry should put this on the News Blog! If that's the only reason people are gonna move away from OS10 (right now), then they those Crackberrians should know about that!
