After checking out the CB photos, one problem I see with the removal of app icon boxes is that the text below it will have varying visibility depending on the wallpaper you use. I remember this from OS6/7. Even if you make the text completely solid, if you have white text and a white/light background, it will be really difficult to read. This is a function, not style, problem.

Of less concern is the style issue of the icons appearing less consistent with each other, when you remove the box. One of my biggest gripes about the Android style is the inconsistent style of icons. Yuck. If you really need to change this, BlackBerry, just make the boxes a little smaller. Also, please do something about the "close" function in the active frame. The "x" is too small. (Perhaps consider the PB version of closing an app?)

Please remember that this is nowhere near being ready for a release. The assumption is that it's a version cobbled together for testing. Once the bugs are out, the polishing will happen.

I get that, Elessar. but my comment on the visibility stands. It's a potential oversight as the designers may only be using stock wallpapers and this problem may not be apparent.

In the aggregate I like the direction and nearly every new development on bb10 and have enjoyed running leaks, accepting them for what they are. The opportunity for BlackBerry to get early feedback from lots of users is a good asset imo, though it is surely a pia to sort out the whining from useful suggestions.

I honestly hope they revamp the icon set completely and do something similar to how they are on BlackBerry Blend.

I really liked how the name of the app was on top and just make the name of the app part of the icon itself, without any spacing so it won't matter what the wallpaper is. Having the name on top of the app makes so much sense and it looks great too.

Now I know the video that showed BlackBerry Blend would be more suitable as an active frame within the BlackBerry 10 phone system but similar design ideas could be used on the app icons too.

I am with you, some of them look really out of place, particularly with circular logos.

I prefer it this way. It gives me the impression that the icons are lifted off of the wallpaper.

I would like to hide the texts completely - I mean every app has its own unique symbol so I never read their names.

I know this is off topic, but I would like to see the ability to use an animated gif for background, not like android live wallpapers that you can interact with, that is to much, and it just eats the battery

I find that the text can be unreadable with some wallpaper, but the big boxes look a bit clunky. Perhaps a compromise in in order. What about only having the box around the name of the app, not the icon? I don't have any editing tools here at work so I can't create an example, but it sounds reasonable. I also think it might be nice to have an option for the box and text color on the home screen.

Vgorous, I also like the "lifted" illusion. Maybe BarracudaBob's compromise could work.
