Ever since the update, I'm no longer able to do anything else while Youtube is on if I want the video to continue in the background. Is there a workaround this?
Go to your browser ( assuming you use the browser for youtube) then clear your "cookies ". Also, hard rest the device by holding the volume up and down of your device.
I have just experienced the same issue on 10.3.2. This has definitely nothing to do with OS, as clients like FastTube or SuperTube began to have serious problems as well.
Hi i use 10.3.2 and i can't use it too. If you change to desktop mode in Browser you are able to listen to youtube while multitasking. Otherwise it now pauses if you change to another tab(or app)

I had the same issue but after updating to 10.3.3 I have no issues. I recommend doing the update but I would wipe the phone first then updated and start over.
Tried clearing cookies and history and also disabled block pop ups on my Z30STA100-5/10.3.3.2205 , however YouTube doesn't play while browser minimised. Missing this feature.

Works fine here. Did you try to logout? Sounds weird to me, that it works for some and not for others.
This does not appear to be a widespread issue. If it persists, do a wipe and start from scratch

Wipe a device because the browser is no longer multitasking YouTube video?! That's ridiculous. This sucks.
I have always been able to do this until tonight (Z30STA100-5/10.3.3.2205) and I have been updated for a couple of months I think.
What did they do to cause this?
I cleared my cache and cookies, hard reset, but still video playing in the background is not working.
Thankfully Evolution browser is still functioning as it should, but the bb10 browser is now one more foot closer to grave if this is not fixed. (without a device wipe! God, I hope no one goes to that extreme!)
Edit:
Tried private browsing and no luck, it stops. Actually had no sound at all... boy this is payback for bad mouthing the browser on the free browsie news item comments.
Will try a couple of reboots again.

^dude, this just happened to me too!
It might be something server side because other videos work as normal

It's spreading. I think with BlackBerry more and more tied to Android/Google, they are tightening up to ensure that we bb10 users don't have the freedom we once did. This inability to play in the background, from what I understand is standard on Android unless you pay for YouTube Red.
It absolutely is. It can't possibly be anything on our phones--not just because we're all using different devices and OS versions, but because this isn't an issue that presented itself after a browser update. YouTube changed, not our phones.
I don't think the hypothesis about YouTube Red is correct--after all, there's no possible way to get or use YouTube Red on BB10.
Rather, this is much more likely related to adverts. I'm not sure if you've done so, but YouTube adverts have been fast-forwardable up until now. Most of the time it doesn't save you much time, but on 30 second adverts it's something. YouTube surely noticed something was 'up', that their adverts were being skipped. (Instead of loading the video once from the beginning, as is done normally, it'd be requested from the server once at the beginning, and then again from 28 seconds in, or whitherever you skip.) This means they can't charge for the advert, which is the last thing they want to have to deal with on mobile; they're already losing enough on desktop revenue with more and more people using adblockers.
Videos no longer playing whilst minimised likely wasn't their goal. Rather, they made server-side changes to the player that makes the adverts unskippable. The stopping when minimised was just collateral, an unfortunate side-effect of the real change they wanted to make.
Please clear cache and history upto 3 times and do upto 3 reboots (restart) over 3 days. It should hopefully get the browser to do what we want it to do on .2205
It worked out this way for me and therefore I suggest doing this.
I doubt it has anything to do with YouTube figuring out us bb10 solitary reapers just streaming music and not actually looking at the video stream and therefore not watching their ads/forwarding them...
