Just wanted to hear some opinions on a thought that crossed my mind. Do you guys think 10.3.1 could be the last major update for BB10 legacy devices (Z10/30, Q5/10)? Or will BlackBerry continue to update them to the latest iteration of the OS?

its possible. I think they will get 1 more major upgrade but it might not be "major" 10.3.2 would be the best guess. after that i would say minor bug fixes will be it. 64 bit is coming and that will be the end for the legacy bb10 devices

They can't kill off older devices without killing off the Classic at the same time. And they won't, since it's targeted to enterprises/governments upgrading from decrepit Bolds. When the Classic becomes decrepit, then maybe.

I'm sure they'll get another update but it won't be anything huge. Maybe something to do with Project Ion, or an extension to BlackBerry Blend. But yeah, 64-bit is the way to go.

@Thurask Given that the classic is fairly new, I'd say at least another 18 months before the original BB10 devices become legacy.

    ^this.
Bug fixes for 10.3.1 most likely. None of BB10 devices is profitable. Won't be a surprise for me if Chen makes a decision to discontinue hardware and OS development by the end of 2015.

I'd have to agree with this statement.

The moment they kill off their then 'legacy' BlackBerry10 devices, they're going to lose a large portion of users if they don't time it well and give the users (mainly converts) good incentives like trade-in for their previous device on the new device, etc.

They simply don't have the market share to be able to do what Apple does with every iOS update and stop supporting two previous phones.

To be completely honest, the BlackBerry10 phones (even the older ones) all still have fairly powerful hardware and are at the very least, sitting in the 2015 mobile mid-tier hardware for the Z10 and Q10. They're still good now, so I'd say at least another year and a half at a minimum, maybe even longer.

You've got to remember, the kernel here they're working with is QNX which is designed to be lightweight and work across many hardware platform variations.

Assuming BlackBerry10 was designed similarly, they should be able to just give more power to the better phones while still supporting the older devices.

Just my thoughts on the subject! :P

Honestly, I wish the reports show some hope. I don't believe in magic though. Nobody talks about BlackBerry, no marketing whatsoever, carriers don't have the devices on stock... i don't know what's the plan to boost sells. Many people don't know what products BlackBerry offers, many don't know even BB10 exists. Can't be too optimistic in this case. Chen really has to make a decision very soon.

Moreso than that, the brand is severely damaged to the average consumer.

They could continue to support current BlackBerry devices with smaller OS updates and release BlackBerry 11 with 64bit support alongside with new devices.

Chen did make his decision, no?

He's sending his teams to the enterprise sector to peddle BES12. BB10 devices are handy (but not entirely necessary) to support that goal. Consumer sales are just ancillary.

My guess is that they need about a third to a quarter of the required 10 million annual device sales to come from consumers - that's about 2.5-3.5 million units a year. I'm sure the 10 million or so BlackBerry diehards out there can handle that - that's a new device every 3 years for each of us.

The trick will be to get the 6.5-7.5 million devices sold to business once BES12 gets out there in force over the next year or so.

Sorry for the derail. Back to the topic...

It's hard to achieve. Companies want to keep their employees happy. The last company I know of using BlackBerry devices is moving to iOS devices in June. The main reason is very simple - employees don't want to carry 2 devices anymore. Currently everyone has a company BlackBerry Q10 and own Android or iOS device.

Woops, did NOT mean to thank you for that.

You really need to get more of your facts straight. Many large companies and even small companies have switched over to BES10/12 because of how efficient they are.

At the same time, many have switch to BlackBerry10 devices because of the devices themselves, they can be partitioned if you will, allowing the employees to have two different sectors on the phone, one for work, one for play.

These are all things anyone who frequents CB would know seeing as these are the types of articles that pop up a lot of the time :\

Many companies? And all fit in 0.4% devices sold? Doesn't look like "many" to me.

I know about work and personal space, this is how my company BlackBerry was set few years ago. The problem is people don't like the device. I'm sharing my experience - in a company with about 200 employees there were very few without their own Android or iOS device.

If the BlackBerry Rio/Leap has almost exactly same specs as Z30 then the 1st gen devices must get updates for at least another year or two. Not saying that they would do that though..
