What you wrote may be exactly what Chen, et al, were thinking. I claim no special insight; the Android nonsense is just not how I would have played it. All in or all out, say I.

I get your point about Blackberry 10, too, although -- as has been pointed too many times to count -- it seems smart marketing (or _some_ marketing) could have gone a long way with such a superior product.

To sum up, I'm not surprised to see the Blandroid Gambit isn't working out for TCL, either.
There was never enough money to out market the Android/IOS war between two OS and the Android OEMs as well.

Plus , BlackBerry was already broke. They spent all their money getting BB10 to introductory state (unfinished) without any money left to really market. They were fighting corporate death with all the Z10 returns. Nobody really wanted the company.

It's been a fun ride. It makes sense they left hardware, the way they did. It was their identity when Chen stepped in. He's a turnaround specialist that has done his job very well.

I've come to believe his Asian country bumpkin act is just that... He's sharp...

That said, I also think article regarding TCL is disingenuous. Misleading title regarding older news. Plus, the success of BlackBerry shares has nothing to do with hardware anymore.

Android was a necessary expense to keep BlackBerry relevant as they finished dumping BB10. There was / is no scenario that kept BB10 after it almost killed the entire company. Even the founders of BlackBerry didn't want BB10 or the company anymore.

BlackBerry spent very little on Android compared to what it got as overall company. It allowed shareholders and more importantly vendors to keep faith in the entire corporation while they've slowly expanded the remaining business. Android bought confidence and time, simply put.
I think you give Chen too much credit. He knows very little about the phone business . The PRIV was not ready for prime time and it was too expensive to make. Not a wise choice.

I personally believe with the strong BB10 loyalty individuals would pay $50.00 a month to $75 a month and there would be 500,000 subscribers. Maybe more..
Given that not that many people are willing to pay 99 cents a month for the BlackBerry suite, what are the odds that the 10,000 remaining customers, two years hence, would pay 50 dollars a month.

Secondly, there can be no new run time and the browser is no longer up to date.

If you want to keep using your Classic or Passport for your the next two years, you might want to buy a spare.

He's a software guy. He's no dummy. Hes a software company turnaround specialist. If you don't plan on staying in hardware then you don't need a phone guy.

Even Chen has bosses, the BOD and institutional shareholders, and they wanted to save their holdings and make the most possible with the most probable scenario of success with best risk adjusted results.

As I've said. Staying in hardware with Android was PR more than anything. Now, revenue standpoint, phone software is minimal. If built up, great, but that falls to another company if TCL drops license. They're going where future recurring money resides now and has growth potential.

The only tangible part of the BlackBerry phone business that is not PR is the BlackBerry physical keyboard in a device laid out in a portrait format.

Why doesn't CB send a letter to Chen with the poll #'s ? Not that it will make a difference at this point, but maybe instead of "at least 2 years" he might consider 4 or 5? For those who use BB10 exclusively for email, and simply doesn't support an Android product, maybe we can gain more time? Whatever CB can do to communicate the $1.5 million + users would be appreciated.
One more time: BLACKBERRY HAS GONE OUT OF THE HARDWARE / PHONE HANDSET BUSINESS.
So, not much sense in sending that poll to Chen, is there?

There is probably much less than 1.5 million BB10 active phones and in 2 years ,the number still in use, will be probably about the same as BBOS now.

I would buy a new BB10 phone (to replace Z30) IF there was a commitment to frequent updates. The current built features and native apps will do. New BB10 phone is unlikely to happen as Chen is rightly focusing on higher margin opportunities.

P.S. Buy the stock on a dip of 10% or more.

    NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

BB used to do their own manufacturing. ALL of the BB10 developers have been laid off, the manufacturing buildings and tooling SOLD.

BB tried to interest people in licensing BB10 and nobody wanted to license it. BB10 is gone, there will be no more phones with BB10.

Tell me, what other TCL device looks like the Keyone? Or even the Motion?

Yes. The two Detks were rebranded existing devices, but thats not really "copying" when it's your own device. The Priv, also an android device, wasn't copied either, nor was it even a TCL device.

So, only 2 out of 5 BlackBerry android devices are simply "rebranded" TCL phones, 2 others are new designs with no look-alikes, and the Priv is an original non-TCL phone. Your statement of "all" is a bit of an overreach.

As for going back to BB10 phones... hey, that sounds like a wonderful idea. Why don't you write a letter to Chen outlining your idea, how they could grab several million dollars out of the air to rehire the several hundred developers they laid off a few years back and re-buy all the buildings they sold off several years ago. You should include a revenue stream of several million a quarter immediately to offset that BB10 restart cost. Also, you can explain how this will be profitable this time, when BB10 was a drain of several million a quarter last time and nearly bankrupted them. Copy the Board of Directors at BlackBerry and it should be easy to convince them.

Come back and let us know how you did.

BlackBerry. had taken a very nasty decision to stop manufacture bb10 device, BlackBerry 10 devices have professional look, and very solid built quality
BlackBerry 10 os is very easy to use and secured
BlackBerry please rethink about your 10 device, if you reenter in to market, in near future you will be roaring like lion

I wish I could be a brand new classic. I get the issue with software development, and i guess I get the market isn't large enough to support. It's sad because the UI on BB10 is so much better than anything out there (iOS, Android).

Of course, I said the same of the PalmOS/WebOS and thought HP should have doubled down with their tablet and phones...easy to spend someone elses money.

You mean they should have just left after burning through BB10 commitments? BlackBerry Licensing put some free money back in their pocket as they were unloading assets that were no longer necessary.
I think the CEOs lacked the vision and entrepreneurial spirit needed to market it right. Without that it really doesn't matter what phone they try to sell.

It didn't matter what the "CEOs" did after 2009 - it was too late for a 3rd platform anyway. Hindsight is 20-20.

Winters are way too long and cold in Canada (and the nights last forever) for there not to be an alternative platform to just hockey and skiing, so OBVIOUSLY BB10 needs to be resurected in some form as the 3rd platform to tame the sandboxed Google/Android, for the sanity of some of those up and coming software developers.

So what you're proposing is that Google should pay for it, to smoothe out that monopoly/duopoly problem (a la microsoft/apple deal way back).(LOL) Though I'm sure more than 2billion has been lost due to trade-secret loss, smartphone corporate target spying etc, patent avoidance , hacking and on and on.

I Doubt it would be necessary to take 2Bills to reboot bb10, inventory committments and all. It hasn't been idle that long, it's not even dead (in terms of real-life usage), Chen's dollar 99 model bold9900 model sounds interesting. Surely there are global markets that would like that price point, even here in North America.
