I was using the Youtube in desktop mode in the native browser on a regular basis ignoring the warnings on the main YT page (outdated application, etc).
It finally happened. No Youtube in the native browser. Just a blank page.
Still working fine in Fenec except for play/stop button (Passport) does not work.
So, it's a good time to switch to BBTube by Alexey, I think.

Have you tried Browsie Browser? I have had issues with the native browser for some time.

I used Browsie Browser Sunday to watch live streams.

What I have noticed is the desktop version of YouTube doesn't work if signed in. If you sign out, it works. That's why I run Browsie Browser in Desktop mode signed out and mobile mode signed in with the Native Browser.

I tried Firefox, but it is choppy with live streams. The Browsie Browser has clear audio, but poor graphics when live streaming. I will gladly give up the graphics for good audio. These issues aren't an issue watching non live stream videos.

Well for straight up YouTube viewing, I agree BBTUBE is probably better. I use it. But the normal browser I have no problem, my only complaint is it always goes into fullscreen mode when starting a video.
I prefer browsers if possible. Apps are always sketchy, YouTube has even recently broke all the YouTube apps on Windows that I have...

I believe the OP was referring to the special Desktop mode of YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/?app=desktop
It still allows playing videos when the browser is collapsed.
It indeed stopped working in the BB10 stock browser.
