Email response I got after inquiring about the prospects of CIBC's Banking app and Mobile Payments on BB10.

    Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

Please note that we are currently experiencing a higher than usual volume of correspondence and accordingly, our response time is greater than usual. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and thank you for your patience.

As OS 10 is a brand new Operating System, CIBC is currently testing all applications for the newly released Blackberry devices that are using OS 10.

I do not have access to the timeline for a release of this application to provide you with a date but I will relay your suggestion as well.

Thank you for using CIBC Mobile Banking.

    Sincerely,

You know, it's downright shameful that Canadian companies like the big banks are so slow and non-committal with their support of BB (another Canadian company). LCBO is another example. I hope BB shows their appreciation by moving more or their banking business off shore.

I hear you, though to play devil's advocate:

    - BlackBerry OS (the one with 79 million customers including millions of Canadians) is really hard to develop for. It may have a lot of users, but the dev costs would be through the roof making it work across that fragmented platform

    - BlackBerry PlayBook (the one with two million customers and does decently in Canada for a non-iPad tablet) - is easier to develop for but still a small base

    - BlackBerry 10 - just launched in Canada

If BlackBerry 10 takes off - even a bit, the apps will come. Much easier to develop for.

@Rubberchicken: I agree with what you said, but still stand by what I said. These companies provide apps as access portals for their customers, which differ from companies that write apps purely to make money from them. BB10 was no surprise to any of these people, it's been in the news and development platforms have been available for considerable time now. Further, you mention the Playbook, which further's my point. A bank, say RBC, that bothered to write an app for the Playbook would have found itself in a position to port that app to BB10 extremely fast -- a fact that BB mentioned time and again during the last while. By ignoring the Playbook, they ignored a potentially large "Free" beta test market.

Lastly, iOS, Android, and BB10 are ALL Unix based and POSIX compliant operating systems. Porting an app between them should be easier than, say, having to write a Windows vs. Linux native program. I don't think it would be as easy as compiling the source code from the iOS version on a BB10, but the re-write shouldn't necessarily be from scratch.

It actually really gets me angry. There are games, sure, on BB10, but did a single person at BB bother to call any of the large banks and push them to develop an app?

Got a message back from Scotia Bank

"We've confirmed with our developers that they're currently looking into an app but unfortunately we don't have a set date for launch. Feel free to get in touch with us in the future and we'll be happy to give you an update."

well ..... at least they're looking into it ......

My former employer, while not a bank, is a Canadian company and doesn't do game development. BB contacted them about making their BBOS app available on BB10. They opted to play the 'wait and see' game instead, so it wouldn't surprise me if BB was contacting the banks.

While my cibc Andriod port works great I'd much rather have a native app arrive soon. Hope they get on that asap.

    Hello,

We appreciate your enquiry regarding when TD Canada Trust will release an app for the new BlackBerry 10. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

We are pleased to confirm that our technical team is currently working on our plans for a BB10 compatible app; however, at this time, we don't have an estimated time as to when this app will be released. We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused.

We recommend you use our mobile banking site at www.td.com/w in the interim and keep your eye on Blackberry World for future releases.

As BB10 has only just been released, testing must be completed on the final release before we'll make a new app available to the public.

We hope this information and direction is helpful. Please contact us again with any additional questions you have, and please also accept our apologies for the delay in responding to your message.

    Warm regards,

    Melissa

Response from TD ([email protected]) on April 18:
"...We have forwarded a copy of your suggestion to the appropriate business area for consideration of future improvements and enhancements..."

Response from RBC ([email protected]) on May 2:
"There is an app being worked on at the moment for the Z10. However, the exact release date is TBD."

Response from BMO ([email protected]) on April 17:
"BMO is assessing options to support the BlackBerry Z10 in a future BMO Mobile Banking app release."

    ScotiaBank now available.
    CIBC now available.

My main two are RBC and TD so I'm still waiting... Keep emailing/tweeting them, and get others to do the same. Check out my thread below for contact info for more developers and fire off a quick message to the ones you're interested in. If you want apps on BB10, this is the way to get it.

Pretty ridiculous that BMO doesn't have an app since one of their senior executives recently endorsed BB10 as their platform of choice.
