I would like to know since facebook owns whatzapp now, will you abandon the app and go to BBM for security and secure comms. Remember whatzapp wanted your email. With BBM its just a PIN.

BBM checks your contact list for 'recommended' contacts. So your email and PIN are connected anyway.

Whether or not I ditch WA is only dependent on how many of my friends want to switch. Current count is 0. Not because BBM is bad, just because they can not be bothered to try it.
WA has made everyone totally lazy.

I still have a few people on WhatsApp and I'm working on getting them switched over to BBM right now.

There's no way I'm going to keep using WhatsApp and I'll be deleting it very soon.

There is an option in BBM that can restrict contacts to be transferred to BB servers.

I have to apologize, I saw this option on a friend's iphone the other day, and assumed it will also be available on the BB BBM implementation, but apparently it is not, you were right.

That's okay, I am actually glad it is an option on iOS. So people have a feeling of privacy when using BBM.

Actually my friend complained because it was enabled by default. He had to disable it manually. I think he was right, it should be disabled by default (and also avaialble for BB10/BBOS users).

you still wouldn't (or shouldn't) use BlackBerry Messenger for a secure or even semi-secure conversation. there are much better choices for that.

if you follow the article through to the source documents such as http://www.priv.gc.ca/cf-dc/2013/2013_001_0115_e.asp it doesn't quite match up to what the article is saying. According to that, the message encryption is now a random 160 bit key for example, rather than based on the MAC or IMEI like it used to be. This is safer than BlackBerry Messenger's completely static, common to every device in the world key.

I agree that whatsapp shouldn't be considered secure, but neither should BlackBerry Messenger
