Okay... so a new snapchat update came out today. It could break the API I have. The feature it added isn't too complicated to add, but it definitely won't be in the beta.

Well they are worth $800+ million which is a 1/3 of what BlackBerry makes. That wouldn't be a smart purchase haha

In Less Than Two Years, Snapchat Is An $860 Million Company - Forbes

    Posted via CB10
Reading the article, this is what worries me:

Reached over the phone, Spiegel says that the company is actively pursuing monetization strategies. Snapchat will likely use both in-app purchases and native advertising to make money in the coming year.

“Tencent is a huge role model for us,” Spiegel says, referring to the Chinese owner of messaging apps QQ and WeChat. “90% of their revenue comes from in-app purchases.” Native advertising will take longer to perfect, he cautions. The company, along with marketers, will need to figure out how to incorporate effective advertising into users’ streams without disrupting the experience.

The company has hired Phillippe Browning, a former vice president of advertising and operations for CBS Mobile, as VP of monetization. Spiegel says that he previously directed all emails from interested marketers into a dead-end mailbox. Those emails now go to Browning.
They will be actively pursuing monetization by means of in-app purchases and advertising within the app itself. So This will be a nail in the coffin of any third-party developed app.
On the plus side, If a working third-party app is released and it's native and open-sourced this could be used as a template for the SnapChat devs to create a native SnapChat app.
On the negative side, if the app is open-sourced it doesn mean that the default license on it would prohibit the SnapChat devs to use portions of the code without they themselves open-sourcing it.

    2 options are available.

    A) You create the app as closed source (deleting the code at GitHub) release the app in the hopes the SnapChat devs don't complain and send the source code to them to use and work on an official SnapChat client. This way however would see you devoid of any acknowledgement...

    B) You create the app as open-source and add an MIT/Unlicense license to it. Which gives everyone the right to use it as they please. Absolving you from any liability in the use of your code by others. This way however is no different than option B in the clear understanding that no acknowledgements need to be given.

No license isn't an option as it would prohibit anyone to modify your code as standard copyright licenses apply. Choosing an OSS license doesn?t need to be scary - ChooseALicense.com

    C) Yes there is in fact another option... contact the SnapChat devs, tell them all you want to do is bring SnapChat to BB10 and collaborate on the app if they allow it. With a bit of luck you'd get the acknowledgement you so rightfully deserve and BB10 gets an official SnapChat app with your name going in the CrackBerry hall of fame (is there even such a thing? I think we need this).

I will probably give it MIT or LGPL. I would like them to use it, but I also want it to remain free, as in libre for everyone.

That's mighty big of you, I am glad you see it this way.

However an LGPL license will prohibit the use of your code as they will be required to disclose the source. When monetization kicks in an open source app is dead in the water, making it easy for devs to strip the ads and any limitations there might be.

In your case an MIT or unlicense license is the way to go. Making it free to everyone without the need to disclose the source if it's being used in other projects.

Not according to section 4 of the license

    4. You may copy and distribute the Library (or a portion or
derivative of it, under Section 2) in object code or executable form
under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above provided that you accompany
it with the complete corresponding machine-readable source code, which
must be distributed under the terms of Sections 1 and 2 above on a
medium customarily used for software interchange.

If distribution of object code is made by offering access to copy
from a designated place, then offering equivalent access to copy the
source code from the same place satisfies the requirement to
distribute the source code, even though third parties are not
compelled to copy the source along with the object code.

That site actually states that under the LGPL license the code can be used in programs that are not free. It still states the code needs to be released.

Let me point you to a comparison of licenses.

Yes, that is what I am saying. It is hard to be patient though.

Between Snapmate, IGrann, and Whine I think I would just about have my personal wish list covered since BeMaps already has my Google maps in action.

The only other 2 sideloads I use are Kijiji and the Realtor app. I think native versions of these may be wishful thinking though.
