Anyone know if there is an app that will play back 720p Mkv files on a BB10 without converting? On iOS there is an app called AVPlayer HD that does this.

I thought it could play 720 mkv natively. Didn't think it was necessary. I will be watching this thread

MKV is just a container. for some, it'll work and other it wont. the reason for this is MAINLY because if the mkv is encoded with AAC audio or some other compatible format, it will work. however if the mkv is encoded with DTS audio or AC3 audio (which most common MKVs are) then the said MKV wont work. if you can check the media info of each file, it will tell you what video/audio types the MKV is composed of. most common is H264 video and DTS/AC3 audio.

Mine are all AC3 so I know it won't work unless the app is programmed for it. I just wanted to know if anyone is aware of an app that will do it.

I have Kalemsoft for my Playbook and it works quite well - also helps since it can navigate folders/directories so everything is not presented in one all-inclusive list. I have not downloaded it for the z10 since it remains quite pricy.

I've never seen a device play back these types of files without an app.

Downloaded 5 files, all mkv. Four with ac3 coding would not play on the z10. The one with acc coding played fine. Proof that, at least, those four files would not play.

KalemSoft... works just like VLC if you are familiar with VLC... ie, it plays almost everything... and certainly works with mkv.. great app... also allows you to navigate your NAS, stream content, play local content, etc...

it plays AAC just fine, not AC3... for that you'll need software; vlc, kalemsoft... etc..

BB10 can play ac3 files fine.

I'm on 10.2.1 and just tried a test mkv with ac3 and it works. I know ac3 worked, then didn't. Not sure which version BlackBerry removed it

For those of you on 10.2.1.1055, if you download joe's VLC from Google play, it will play MKV files with AC3 audio. You're welcome. I will try DTS audio and update later.

Note: my specifying the OS is because that's what I'm on. Anyone who wants to try to get the apk converted to try on other OSs should try and report back.

It absolutely does 16:9... I can provide screen shots or youtube if required... just look in the settings.

PS im on Q10... I also have kalemsoft on PB, and the aspect ratio is adjustable on there as well...

I can't say as I have not bought it yet. But I have been reading the reviews. That seems to be the case for Q10. People claiming the solution for wide-screen is to minimize app, put phone on its side, and go back to app? I dunno about that.

If this went on Xmas sale, I'd be more inclined to buy tbh. Partially because I simply don't use my phone as primary multimedia device. I wonder tho, would kalemsoft have any thoughts on doing ANYTHING with chromecast?
