This is a neat app that showcases the NFC in BlackBerry 10. Initially I gave this app a bad review because I didn't know how to use it properly, which isn't too surprising considering there's no instructions! Basically, this app will display the photo, name, nationality, sex, issuing authority, by holding the phone next to a passport with the NFC chip embedded in the cover. But first you must enter the passport number, date of birth, and expiry date manually. That's the part that wasn't clear to me. But a bit of Internet research showed that is the standard for ePassport because it means a passport can't be scanned surreptitiously.

Anyway, it's free, so give it a try. There's apps like this out for Android, but of course nothing for NFC ignoring iPhone. It was fun to demonstrate it to my iPhone -owning wife using her passport!
