Properly formatted GPS coordinates should just be a clickable link. To save your current location, you could simply share it with someone. It saves to "Recents" within the app. You can also go to share, and cancel the share and it remains under recents.
Go to My Places. Add Favorites (overflow menu). Then My Location at the bottom bar.

Let the Maps app GPS sync to your current location.
Then tap My Places/Favorites/More/Add Favorite/My Location - if it all looks good, the tap Save.

Apparently you cannot.
