Anyone here know why BlackBerry Protect was nerfed. I mean, like why remove the ability to back up my calendar, contacts and notes.

I'm not sure why exactly. But, I do know if you're using Google Calendar and Contacts, I'm not 100% sure that a backup is compulsory since it is all in the 'cloud' anyway...

Some of us want a 'belt and braces' approach to backups; I'd feel much safer if I could use Protect to back up my data.

Maybe because you can backup your whole phone with Box, the cloud storage service. However I think people who dont want to join Box will find it annoying, so perhaps in a future upgrade it will be there

    Good question.
I was told by my carrier to use clone phone to back my phone up, but it's not supported.

Would love it if there is indeed a way to have a fallback other than Google (which I love)

I searched around, and you can only back-up videos and photos through box

Coming back to this for a mo. I just logged into Protect and selected My Data. The screen blurs out and a pop up appears informing that my 'blackberry 10 device currently makes use of Blackberry Desktop Manager for back up and restore functions.

Now I'm not one to be picky, ok maybe just a little bit... but one of the biggest gripes of all new Z10 owners is that Blackberry Desktop Manager does NOT work with BB10 devices.

It's little things like this that really get my back up, no pun intended lol. Seriously though, at least get the facts right. BB10 uses Link not DM.

Come on Blackberry, get your game together here.

the back up feature with Link takes wayyyyyyyyyyyyy to long and I'd also like to be able to back up my notes and calenders while out and about as i m not at home everyday.

Well I'm not happy that protect has been gutted. But right now my issue is that protect keeps turning itself off - or something is shutting it down. I go to settings and it is of. I turn it back on and the next day its off. What gives? Any one else seeing this?

Yeah, I just went to mine and it said it was off, strange, that's also never good, it's also not good that it can be shut off without a password.

Agreed. I always liked protect. I do regular backups but it's always good to have a second option. Hope they restore it.

Having the same here, seems to turn off when you restart the phone and other random times.
Would love the whole old protect back.

And just to prove me wrong, it hasn't done it that to me lol.
Wonder what the cause is then?

I want my notes and everything in remember backed up.
Switching to evernote/outlook based notebooks accomplishes that.

It was nice to have Protect on 7.1, but I think everything's being lumped in to BlackBerry ID. My device switch, sans Link, ported over all of my contacts.

Hmmm I'm not sure that my contacts came over when I logged my BlackBerry id in
That's what I over a about protect. You could choose a roll back point etc.
