Fellows and gals, does anyone know of an app which switches my Q10 to bedside mode automatically at a fixed time, so i'm not woken up by random e-mails. On my old Palm I used to have Butler software which would help me control this function besides doing other things as well.

Not that I can find -- and I've checked periodically. I'd like this badly, myself.
I have a feeling that the API's haven't been made available to developers for them to be able to do so. However, I'm not a developer so I could be mistaken..

I never tried it myself, but Color LED Message by Toysoft has a profile manager as part of its functionality.

I think that is one of those "headless" limitations - you'd have to leave such an app open, if such apps are even allowed to control such OS functions. I do miss the auto on/off from prior BB OS versions. Off at 11pm and on at 6am (and the alarm could function even when OFF!)

Color LED is a useful app, but it doesn't handle what the OP and I are looking for.

You can try using the NFC capabilities? Get a NFC tag, place it somewhere in your bedroom, and program it to automatically place your phone on bedside mode at a certain hour and turn it off at another hour? May be an option.
