I have Osmand which has very updated maps, but usability is not good. Horrible trying to find stuff. Navfree and Maps.Me are better but the maps are not updated. They are all based on OpenStreetMaps, why do they all need to reformat to something proprietary?

I tried copying Maps.Me maps Android but it seems the newer maps aren't compatible? I also tried updating Genius Maps using same method but I can't seem to copy the files off the Android phone.

Offline usage is the hangup, otherwise I would just use the default maps app which does good enough for me.

how did you get osmand to run?
For me it started fine once but since then I just get a black screen and nothing happens.
    Installed through fdroid.

I have the one from BlackBerry World. The one from Fdroid is likely too new requiring too much of the Android runtime
