I work for a university in a department that handles health care data. The school won't purchase BES because of the price but I still want MY device to be secured (smime, bbm protected, etc). Could I set up my own BES server and add a few of the people in our department who want to be on either with their ios or android?

Yes, you can. Question is if you want to do it. You need an exchange / lotus server and the bes 12 server. I think both can be on the same hardware. All in all it could be a little expensive for private people, but it is possible

I often wonder about a solution myself.

For example, how many users would need to collaborate in order buy a 1U, BES, Exchange & server licences, host it in a local data centre while keeping the per user annual cost affordable?

Is this even allowed under the terms and conditions of the various licenses?

It seems that BES is the only way to take full advantage of BlackBerry's security features in these post BIS days.

You hit the nail on the head! And to the first fellow, isn't BES10 like $99 a year per device? Is there cheaper versions then shelling out thousands?

You could also use BES12 with Office 365 or an existing mail server. So for the OP you could setup a BES12 server, purchase the required licenses (or at least the 60 day free trial to test) and then configure the User's ActiveSync profiles to match that of your University's email server.

If they currently enable mobile device connection, then it would work fine on here and you dont need to configure multiple email servers.

Okay so I paid for gbesx.com and their customer service is sloooooooow. The smime is turned on and I can turn it on and off but the cert area is greyed out. I sent them my keys and they are taking so long on my ticket. Ugh. Does anyone recommend someone else? To the last person is office 365 good/cheap?

For my personal account on 265 and now our business on 365 we have had great support. usually about 3-4 hours to respond support enquiries and the majority of which are resolved in the first or second communication. And with lots of forums t80% of any problems that come up are probably already answered

How exactly do you get BES satisfied when you install it, if you use BES in conjunction with Office365? I thought that during the installation process, BES says Exchange is a prerequisite and won't install if Exchange isn't available.

BES 12.1 does not ask for Exchange to install. That is a configuration setting later on.

When you create an email policy within the BES Console you configure the email accounts. Here is a screenshot of my Office 365 email config
Can anyone run their own BES server?-emailpolicy.png

Let me know if you need any help
