I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be happy that BlackBerry was sold, but as a stock holder, I'm definitely not. $9 a share is crap.

Anything can happen till Nov 4. At least the bottom has been set.

Smart on Fairfax's parts, since they and their friends hold the bulk of the shares. Also flushes out any potential buyers.

No longer a shareholder... so no I'm not pissed.

I envisioned that Hardware/Software/MDM is pretty much done - the launch failed, so these have very little value in the long term. So Cash, Patents, other divisions, real assets... about $7 - $8 Billion in value. Given that Fairfax is most likely buying BB for it's parts and is going to have pay to close down divisions and the auction off the remaining assets, and the fact that they are only doing it for profit. $4.7B sounds about right.

Now IF BBRY does have 2B in cash, I think that another deal isn't out of the question.... If I were Apple I'd buy them just to keep anyone else from getting them....

Hope for a white knight, although a bidding war seems unlikely.
Watsa was on the board and is a very shrewd businessman; he didn't overbid.

It makes me wonder why so suddenly they reported such a large write-down and all these other factors make the share price drop to a level that Prema would buy it for.

@qbnkelt - I agree with your mentality of not buying if you're not prepared to lose it, but $9 a share seems crazy to me.

I agree. I wonder if we'll see that adjusted up, though. Just having an offer on the table leads to a lot more confidence in BB's survival...

A list should be compiled of the "experts" around here swearing the market was wrong and they had a $12-15 / share valuation. These people should never be trusted.

A lot of people suggested if the company went private, it would be be worth $13 to $15 a share on buyout. Apparently not. Blackberry shareholders got a raw deal.

Pissed? No? Thus company should be put out of business if for nothing else but to stop the bad phones and os crom appearing again ever.
Also..way to go with bbm. Stellar job yet again.
Not sure what you?re talking about. The phones are good and the OS is pretty solid. If there is anything specific that you're talking about, post about it. The BBM rollout sucked...nothijg else to say about that.

Back to the point, however, aren't BlackBerry's patents worth a whole lot more than $4.7 billion? Whether Fairfax decides to break the company apart and sell it off or not, the value is still there, no? Am I missing something?

I'm gonna go with this and add: bb knew about the deal, but needed a smoke screen(a very big one), so they botched the launch on purpose to take attention away.

Pure manipulation at work here. Now we know why suddenly Blackberry pre declared bad results on the last Friday. The numbers looked purposely beaten down. Fu*k Watsa and Heins and entire BOD. I see class action suit coming there way.

That's actually a very real possibility. There was clear desperation to sell the company quickly. Intentionally dropping the stock to match the only bid on the table would for sure put some people in prison. Good luck proving it though. I doubt anything was lied about. I have to wonder if BBM rollout got pulled as part of this deal also.
