    Revenue: US$2.7-billion
GAAP Income: US$94-million, earnings of $0.18 per share
Adjusted Income: US$114-million, earnings of $0.22 per share

BlackBerry sold 6 million smartphones in Q4
    BlackBerry sold 1 million Z10s in Q4

BlackBerry global subscriber base is now 76 million

They missed revenue slightly, and down on subscriber base, but did beat earnings, and sold z10's right about as expected.

I predicted 1M in the 1st month... I was right. Now we'll see if I get the rest right. 3-5M in it's first full quarter and 20M for the year.

Remember, this report only accounts for 3 weeks of canadian sales and 4 weeks of UK sales.

Negatives- subscriber loss of 3m, revenues down slightly

You said that anything less than 50m z10 would be a failure that results in the death of BBRY. I am too busy to pull the thread but it exists and it was recent.

hopefully we get sell through on the call. That will determine how many of those million were sold to customers. With all the sellout reports that would be great if its close to a million too.

On drop of subscribers, I wonder if new Z10 users (excluding BES-enabled corporate phones) count as subscribers now that they do not use BIS? Anyone?

    "Shipped" 1 million z10's, not "sold"...big difference.

Heins gave rough numbers on that, saying "2/3 to 3/4 sold through".

(Edit: His comment, however, was in the Q&A afterwards, and it was clarified that the sell-through ratio was NOT for just the Q4 "1 million shipped" but rather for everything to-date. Sell-through for the Q4 stuff is probably far higher but they didn't answer that specifically.)

    Definitely found it interesting.

    Surprises:
    - They kept cash flat, despite the launch. I thought it would drop meaningfully to $2.2 billion or so, but it stayed around $2.9 billion.
    - The subscriber erosion was a slight bit steeper than I thought. I thought maybe 77 million, not 76. Again, tough quarter with what they had to sell at Christmas and also the world getting date for when BlackBerry 10 was coming
    - Wasn't expecting a profit at all. So that's impressive, even if it's in "breakeven" territory
    - Sellthrough of 7.9 million was higher than I though it would be. (As usual, some tech blogs are implying they shipped 6 million and not sold ... forgetting this number).
    - Z10 was actually a little higher than I thought, given availability. There's probably more Z10's sold by now than PlayBooks in 8 quarters given its availability in 40 countries now.
    - PlayBook was about what I expected ... surprised they didn't announce what they plan to do with it though. What will they announce next quarter if inventory has mostly dried up?

Heins gave rough numbers on that, saying "2/3 to 3/4 sold through".
And also that it's hard to calculate as it's constantly filling in and going out. With the BlackBerry OS devices, it's easier as they've been on the market.

With every earnings call, BlackBerry gives two numbers:

    - The shipped rate, which is part of the press release. In this quarter, 6 million devices shipped, including 1 million Z10s.
    - The sellthrough rate, which is usually part of the commentary or questions. In this quarter, 7.9 million phones sold through. When asked specifically about Z10, Thorsten found it a bit hard to define given the inventory ramp up and newness of the product, but typically 2/3rds to 3/4ths are sold through at any given time, with inventory turning over quickly.

I'm sure some uninformed tech blogger will declare, "Z10 a failure! Only 600,000 or so sold". And not understand what actually was said.

I think we can call this quarter a "push".

Yes, earnings are always good but 1 million Z10's shipped is not exactly a home run, given the market. Also, 6 million unts shipped is "down" when you compare it to the normal 15 million volumes seen a year ago. It seems BBerry is still trying to find itself in the market and we're still not out of the woods yet.

Looking with a positive perspective, the product transition is still very much underway and it's too early to say which way this is going to go. Looking at the negative view, the Z10 hasn't exactly been an initial huge success and more time will be needed to see if it really takes off. The Q10 will now need to be a larger success than earlier thought, if BBerry is going to acheive the solid 3rd place provider.

To put this all into perspective, the current world market is about 100 million devices per quarter and BBerry should be capturing 25% - 30% of that volume.

Overall, great news given that this includes Christmas (with no new product at the time), matched analysts expectations in some areas, and beat expectations in others. Good job to Thorsten and the team. And best of wishes to Mike Lazaridis on his new endeavour, without him there would be no Blackberry. Nice to see overall positive media reaction (at a glance), hoping this is the beginning of the end of the "RIM/Blackberry is finished meme' of the last year or so. Have a good day everyone!

These numbers are OK, not too impressive, IMHO.
Considering the pent up demand, i'd have expected the UK and Canada sales to be much better. About a month availability in both countries, with added sales from the middle east, India and Indonesia.

Still, it shows Blackberry are in it. True test will be the next quarter result.
