I'm just hoping these initial strong sales keep up. they won't do much good if demand fizzles out in a month or less. I would like to see some numbers on actual customers switching from other platforms to bb10 to see if these strong sales are or are not from just bb addicts all upgrading now.

The demand burst will slow down as time passes but all happy customers will keep adverstising for bb and slow and steady demand will help BB in coming months..

I think there is going to be strong word-of-mouth. I knew there'd be some pent-up demand, but fortunately the phone itself is also really good. iPhone users who see the Z10 develop a serious case of keyboard envy

I know you will think I am a Troll but here goes. In order to get word of mouth going you need a certain base to begin with. Say 20 people out of 100 in a room are using Z10's or talking about BB ... you can start the word of mouth effect. I don't think you get the word of mouth effect when only 4 out of 100 are using or talking about the Z10.
It will be incredibly difficult to break into markets where BB is not strong now. Not impossible but BB would really have to market well.

I don't think you're trolling at all, but I do think you're confusing "word-of-mouth" with "peer pressure".

I'm thinking of the scenario where a user gets a new Z10, shows it to friends and family, and it develops significant interest. And I believe the Z10 is actually good enough to do that.

Z10 is good hardware, good OS, just need few core apps to convience those non-bb users. Remember that just like consumers changed the BYOD and presurred IT to deploy non-bb phones, the same consumers have become techies and geeks and like to switch/try new things.

I hope you are correct. They badly need instagram before the USA launch. One good thing BB has is the cross carrier support that WP8 lacks. I would be more confident for BB if their phone was larger. I don't mind 4.2 inches but 4.6 inches would have been more popular with consumers. It would have also helped to have the Q10 and Z10 to release together since the focus is on the OS. My worry is that the current market penetration in the USA is so low that "peer pressure" is insufficient to allow BB10 to reach the "tipping point" . The USA market particularly likes winners and the window of opportunity is not measured in years.

BB needs to focus more on in store presentation. The Z10 needs to be displayed as far away as possible from the Curve's etc. Walmart is doing a good job at segregating and displaying the Z10 - right next to the Apple display. I think that BB should have gone for a video display ,on the phone itself ( animation if you like) , showing a finger swiping through the various features. It would be like your buddy showing you how his new phone works. None of the sales persons could be bothered. The current displays are OK but too static.

To be fair, the gadget masters is just a bb fan blog that includes some minimal amount of non BlackBerry stuff.

It's unlikely that they'll be news anytime soon

The idea that people would buy the devices because of purchases within their reference groups was also advanced for WP7 - people forget but that had similar reviews when it came out.
