QNX is everywhere but embedded and doing specific tasks. I think it was BB to first give it an UI. Personally I think they underestimated the task big time.
I still think back when they kept showing that canned peek and flow demo over and over it was because that was all they could make it do at that point, and that phase lasted several months. Not good. BUT, since that point they've come pretty dang far. I know they've laid off thousands of people, but I think they could use more talent to help continue to develop the OS.

And I remember how people got bashed hard for saying it is a demo xD

I am using my Z10 right now, and they definitely came a long way. I bought the PlayBook when OS2 came out, and I really wondered why it was so hard for them to show a fully functional phone, when they PlayBook worked well enough for my uses.
We could give them the benefit of doubt in that case, that they had to keep a lot of things secret. It just made no sense that they had QNX working on older hardware...

Thanks PantlessPenguin for looking it up. I am pretty good at researching things, but couldn't find reliable information concerning LiveProfile. But it is fascinating, that they have a cross platform, with no branding. No info who works on it, and what the future plans are.
Before your post, I did not knew that it even exists...

How do you come to think POP email is superior to EAS? Are you serious?

Posted via CB10 from the BlackBerry Z10
I got instant push with it combined with BIS.
    And I got reliable email.
And I got the option of keeping messages on the server and deleting them off my handheld to save clutter.
Nothing else offers me that option.

I tend to agree a lot with KBZ. We had RIM as a case study in my U, on how not to operate a business.......... That is an achievement...

Bobauckland: can we also agree, that privacy is at least something desirable?

I do not see the positive spin from Chris Umi, when he says that BBRY has to subsidize the legacy devices. It is also a rather old analysis, where the Z10 should not have launched.
Of course with time, we have something like economies of scale that kick in, and some other economic effects, so the legacy devices could really be turning a profit right now, on the hardware side.
But if they gave an ROI before is... something we could doubt.
It is also entirely possible that the subsidies RIM gave, ended in a tax write off, so it wasn't that big of a deal. But we have to remember that BBRY had to lay off a lot of people to still be able to compete in the mobile landscape.

    Posted via CB10
I 100% agree with you that privacy is desirable for many people. Myself included.
I don't see Chris Us articles as unbiased.
Whenever something negative comes up he comes up with an article discrediting the author, often calling them liars before the complete facts are out.
Sorry, that's not unbiased, and I try and avoid his articles as they're opinion passed off as fact while having a go at others.
Might be just my opinion but oh well.

Which in a way supports the view that BB10 doesn't play as nice as we have been led to believe. If it's so easy to develop where are all the apps.

    Posted via CB10
    Good point.
    PlayBook was BB10 demo.
2 years later and we still don't have proper profiles, device wide silent mode, basic things you would have thought were possible in a few seconds with this stunning OS.
Devs are having to make workarounds for limitations like 8 Active Frames only, or no headless apps.

I think I will reformat my first post when I have the time. Some ideas were given, others enhanced....
Thanks for the feedback so far! (still waiting for my IT specialist to show up^^)

@ Bobauckland: it is entirely understandable, that you doubt some of the infos given, by the biggest BBRY fan community on this planet. It has to be biased sometimes!
I tend to link to CB though, because enough people trust it more, than let's say BGR. And what Chris Umi said about the ASP of the legay devices is the worst thing a BBRY fan could here.
That he has other articles, where you see clear bias... Of course he has. He is CB's house analyst!

But if someone begins to cross reference a lot of their comments, analysis, essays, you can get reliable enough info out of analysts.
I hope nobody gets mad at me for this, but: i turned a BIG profit, on the BBRY stock, because I strongly believed that it will fall even further, and I waited years to buy. If I would have blindly followed some analysts, I could be broke by now.... I am long on BBRY, since their lowest stock price. That is why I want them to regain service revenue. I could have sold all my shares by now , but I believe enough in the company for the moment..
So I agree partially with you.

Personally I tend to believe that BBRY wanted to forget the Playbook as quickly as possible, after it was their public beta for QNX. And the rate they develop for it, shows me that I could be right. The Playbook became an afterthought the moment in entered the market ( i still love it, though less since i have my Z10 )
The headless apps have to come, and will. If they implement them like "Services" in Windows or just up the limit for the active frames, while making them invisible for the user, is something I don't care. But, at least to my knowledge, the headless apps are of a big enough importance to BBRY, so that they will be implemented sooner than later. Our community here is pretty vocal.

Remember the countless "Let's email Netflix. Or skype. Or whom ever the eff we can annoy today" threads?
That is one reason I do not mind the development of the thread so much anymore. I want a BIS 2.0. Others want "a" BIS. ( As long as it goes more in the BIS 2.0 direction, I am happy). The goals of a lot of users are the same. Just the way how to achieve them, differs.

To finish this post: @all: can we all agree that privacy is at least something desirable, and that enough people are willing to pay for it? Be it via BIS, a VPN, or what ever? (forget the 14 year old FB junkies, they are not BBRY target audience for security...)

Privacy is desirable and that's what I get with my 9900 and BIS for free, BIS doesn't cost me anything. I know some carriers charge extra for it but mine doesn't and neither does my previous carrier.

So the prospect of buying more privacy doesn't appeal to me.

The problem is, that a company needs money to operate (mr. obvious is obvious) .
Why do Android devs have it hard to earn money? Because most (not all) Android users are cheap. They pirate, or only get the lite version. Or the ad sponsored one.
And as you said, you didn't pay for BIS. You got a service that was valuable for you, whithout paying.
( I paid 14 months 6$ a month more, and lots of other users did the same. And because it is easy so state that someone does not care: i pay 45$ a month, with unlimited everything, and 5gb of data. I don't care about the compression at all. But i acknowledge the need for some. To say "I don't care" is the easy way out.)

It is not reasonable to expect from a company, that they gift value adding services to their customers, when they are not in a financial sound situation or a Non Profit.

That's cheap, I pay 36 before VAT (20%) for 1000 minutes, unlimited sms and 1gb of datai do also get 25mb of daily european data and 10 roaming sms.

This is perfect for a Legacy device with BIS.

While I used the Z10 my bill went up to 53 +VAT thanks to the extra data used. I don't even know if Vodafone do a all you can eat plan.

Vodafone should have offered you a test drive data promotion when upgrading to your new phone, so you can work out the data you need.

Vodafone Data Test Drive – Use as Much Data as you Want for 3 Months – Vodafone

Or did you not upgrade your contract, just your device? Still, useful to remember next time you upgrade. We live in a data hungry world now.

I didn't upgrade, I got my Z10 at the launch party and I'm mid contract.

Lol, and for the second part I'll put it this way, there's people that brag about the speed of their car and others that brag about how economic their car is, I'm not data hungry, but the Z10 is very data hungry.

The Z10 is as data hungry as you allow it to be. 220 mb I have used this month.

I wish that was the case for me, I did narrowed down a lot of the data usage to the new BB Maps app, it doesn't cache and every time you zoom or pan it uses 1-2mb, try it if you don't believe me. Legacy caches maps of off line use. And they use far less data by comparison.

So is maps your biggest data use?

How about trying Mireo for z10. It has offline maps that only use GPS.

Or you could get a standalone GPS

Cross platform BBM is the best thing BBRY can do. we have been talking about it with a few non BB users and they would instantly jump on it regardless of cost.

I think for $5 to $15 a year ( different options would be good to have ) with voice and video calling as well as some type of chats, photos etc being backed up on the bbry cloud and some interconnectivity among friends with the ability to play certain games in groups and other neat things that bbry can easily implement would make it a winner.

It is free, accurate, sips data and so very fast on 2G, it caches maps for off line use (up a mountain or whatever) I used it in quite a few countries, I like 2D navigation mainly because it teaches me the way so the next time I don't need navigation, I like to keep it on most times as it shows me my speed. A few times it has put google maps to shame by taking me straight to the door where google maps left me half a mile up the road. I've been using it since the 8320 days and I love it.

legacy maps is terrible though IMO. I would always use a TomTom over legacy maps. Plus the biggest screen size on my legacy devices (9900) is not ideal for navigation. They didn't break maps they have made a completely new maps app which obviously needs some time to be updated but works pretty well every time I have used it so far.

Standalone GPS would set you back 60 quid which is not much if you use it all the time. Would prevent you from worrying about data charges on your phone.

Or maybe buy a Nokia Lumia? Best maps solution in the mobile landscape. Every single reviewer acknowledges that.

A stand alone GPS will set me back 250?... The 60? for the offline app, saves me money.
And don't tell me the legacy app is better. Just... Don't.

Above is a diagram of BIS. Can you explain to me how to achieve the securities needed without a firewall(mdm)? You can't sell ppl security service when you it can't be achieved. Cloud based services with firewall would be the best way to go but not very reliable. Let's not forget the costs too.

I think your idea is great but what happens if something major were to happened? Would BlackBerry's reputation for security be damaged? What lawsuit from consumers?
