    BlackBerry's Q2: A Long's Engagement With The Short Thesis
"it seems clear that Chen is considering an acquisition, but has said several times that valuations are presently too high, and that he’d need a market crash to afford the purchases he wants to make."

It would seem Chen's moment has arrived.

    BlackBerry's Q2: A Long's Engagement With The Short Thesis

    From: Gio Danisi + Yasch
Good article relatively accurate in reflecting BB's current state. I do agree with the author in that BB should spend some of the "cash hoard" do a share buy-back which is particularly advantageous now given the correction we are currently experiencing. Further, he does remind us of BB's lofty past in comparison to today's financial performance. As a sub-$ billion company, BB is now a small fish looking to play in the global market, a fish tank were size really matters.

I think most BB investors are generally optimistic but have grown tired of the "it's coming, just wait" story we hear every quarter. I'm to the point were any action undertaken is welcome, if for nothing else than the potential change in direction.

I think an acquisition to strengthen product offering would be a better use of cash than a share buy back.

It'd have to be a crash that lasts a while to make the acquisition board opt for the buyout rather than weather out the crash.

    Yep. Sorry about that.

Just felt that there needs to be a spark lit from BlackBerry at the moment with this tanked SP.

    Wait! Don't light a match!!

Poor Corbu is looking like a hamster in a seized wheel right now trying to spin with any BlackBerry news.

In the meantime, I was listening to the news and heard that there are online 'voting booths' that are being used. Wouldn't that be something that BlackBerry could get into somehow!?

News from BlackBerry partner Baidu and Tier One partner Ford:

Ford and Baidu team up to test self-driving vehicles in China

Ford and Chinese internet giant Baidu announced a tie-up Wednesday that will see the two firms jointly test self-driving vehicles in China for two years.

The initiative will see the two companies collaborate on the development and testing of driverless vehicles that meet the Level 4 standard set by U.S. industry organization SAE International. This means that autonomous vehicles developed by the two will not require intervention from a human driver.

Interesting numbers from MOBL after the bell last night:

    Revenue was $49.3 million, up 8% year-over-year.
Recurring revenue was $39.7 million, up 19% year-over-year.
    Billings were $57.2 million, up 14% year-over-year.
GAAP net loss per share was $0.07; non-GAAP net income per share was $0.02.
Cash generated in operating activities was $860 thousand.

They are planning a share buyback totalling $ 25M and they turned a non-GAAP profit for the first time. These are the best numbers for MOBl to date and makes you wonder where BB is in comparison in terms of growth. The last time they even came close to these numbers they fired everyone to reduce costs.

Their guidance looks encouraging too. At first blush it looks like they are cutting costs again to achieve those numbers but you can't deny the revs, margins and billings growth. Now we'll have to keep an eye on them.

    What to do BlackBerry??

FireEye has posted better than expected numbers as well. They have cut costs but had some success by moving to a subscription model as has BlackBerry.

What's with this straddling the GAAP and non-GAPP profit number ? Blackberry is doing the same thing !

We do need to remember BB is going through a turnaround and I believe these folks are a relatively new enterprise and so completely different dynamics. Also, they play in the always fickle device market with razor thin margins. I'm not sure of how the cost structure is set-up between them and TCL, I suggest most of the profits will be shown in China and not the US.

Not a really good investment play if you want my opinion.
