the only reason to make QNX open source would be to get the fringe players into using QNX and then if BB had another paid layer they could sell once those fringe companies used and enjoyed the open source version.
but BB also risks having qNX forked and therefore would be a mess the way android is as far as all the forked android systems

so, I really don't know why Chen would have said that, or if he was misquoted or setup

Can a 36-year-old OS save Blackberry? | Brantford Expositor

While you might question BlackBerry for investing in an older technology (that, to be fair, has constantly been worked on over the years to improve), it is actually no different than what Apple did to return to profitability. In 1997, Apple acquired the company NeXT that Steve Jobs founded after he departed Apple in 1985. A main reasons to acquire NeXT was to get its solid operating system, NeXTSTEP, which, like QNX, was based on UNIX. This operating system is still the foundation on which Apple products are built on today.

So, if Apple achieved success by buying an older operating system around which to building its core products, why can't BlackBerry do the same?

The answer is that it can.

The valuations of nearly every technology company have grown to relatively high levels, and in that regard, BlackBerry can look like a steal to many investors betting on the long-term vision of the organization."

Surprised to see this. I had thought the infotainment arm would just be a loss-leader for the additional automotive modules that we're getting into now.

According to these guys, there is 6.3% CAGR expected up to 2023.

Global Automotive Infotainment Market to Grow at a High CAGR of around 6.36 % by 2023- Key Vendors, Trends, Challenges, and Drivers | Expert Herald

Would be nice if we can continue to see growth in the infotainment market at the same time as all the other auto initiatives.

"Automotive infotainment market is segmented on the basis of operating system that includes QNX, linux, Microsoft, and others. The study indicates, QNX segment accounts for highest market share whereas Microsoft segment is expected to be fastest growing in the automotive infotainment market"

Just be cautious here, don't get too excited until it clears the $ 1.30/hr mark. The volume is excellent and all the good news is already out there. The company is dirt cheap down here and their ER is coming in early February. Sometimes it takes large investors time to develop an investment strategy, some wait to hear about next steps for OA, others wait to see the FDA take up the NDA application. We are seeing some money move into this based on what the company has done so far. The ER should be very interesting. Plenty of time to put on a big show here and move above $ 1.30/shr. GL

    Thanks for the update Morgan.

yesterday another of the biotech stocks I hold shot up after it received a solid Buy rating from an analyst. (think the expected stock price was raised from 25+ to 63 nok/share) today there's been some comments about how the billionaire major shareholder made an a lot of money (albeit unrealised) based on the recommendation of an analyst who works for another one of his companies. Buh yeah. I'm happy.

Amazing with markets and Techs doing so well, that this Stock and this Company still do not get the respect they "deserve". By most accounts, they are still in a "show me" mode with many investors... and the public.

... interesting to see how Chen and BlackBerry / QNX can scale up $$$$, as the new breed of intelligent autos roll out in next two to four years time... meanwhile.. they sit on a lot of cash $$$$$.... hmmmmm

Further comment: had BlackBerry invested that cash in AMZN shares.. they would have $6b+ now.... what are they doing????

Ford Scoops Up Software Firms as It Drives Toward the Driverless

Ford Motor Co. is acquiring two small software firms to help build out its mobility business, a move that highlights the need for auto companies to seed their management teams with technology talent to keep pace in a fast-changing transportation sector.

Ford said Thursday it is buying Autonomic Inc., a Palo Alto, Calif., startup with 70 employees that is developing a software backbone for Ford to provide urban transit services to consumers and businesses. Ford said the firm’s CEO, Sunny Madra, will lead a new team inside Ford that will come up with ideas for new transit options.

The nation’s No. 2 auto maker by sales also said it would acquire TransLoc, a North Carolina firm that makes software to help transportation operators optimize drive routes. Ford didn’t disclose terms of either transaction.

Adding talent through acquisitions has become a common strategy among conventional auto makers and suppliers as they scramble to compete with tech giants to develop driverless vehicles and build businesses around them.

Ford, for example, is spending $1 billion over five years for artificial-intelligence startup Argo AI, whose founders had previous ties to Alphabet Inc. and Uber Technologies Inc. GM in early 2016 bought autonomous-vehicle developer Cruise Automation in a deal potentially valued at $1 billion, based on performance milestones.

Cruise, based in San Francisco, has become GM’s Silicon Valley beachhead for attracting tech talent. GM has grown Cruise’s workforce 10-fold in two years, to about 500 employees.

In acquiring Autonomic and TransLoc, Ford considered areas “where we thought we needed a really fast infusion of help,” Ford Mobility President Marcy Klevorn said.

Traditional auto makers are leaning on acquisitions across a broad range of tech realms—everything from software and hardware for self-driving cars to consumer apps—as they prepare for a future in which cars are increasingly automated and connected to other parts of the transportation system.
