A simple chart to show us how we are setting up for another run here:

The BBRY Café. [Formerly: I support BBRY and I buy shares]-bbry-june-7-2017.jpg

We consolidated our five day pennant with an open outside of the trend. We then popped above yesterday's high which is bullish and we dropped back to confirm the breakout. Textbook stuff.

Tell me, how do you sue a company successfully for $ 940 MM/US and simultaneously demonstrate to them at the same time that you should partner up? That JC is crazy good at deal-making.

Several weeks ago I mentioned that I would be a seller of BBRY at or above $ 9.50/shr to compete with my wife in an investment bet. So far, I have pulled every order to sell that block in question because of JC and the TA on this stock. Back in 2012 we didn't have the same quality of TA that we are seeing today even with the pre-launch hype of the Z10 and an $ 18.00/shr/US print. Boy have things changed.

Thanks Corbu and the rest of you for working so hard to keep the news current here.

It's too close to the 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM area where bids die off. I'd buy it at strong support which is currently the red uptrend line which is currently just below $ 11.00/shr. I don't think we'll get to the line unless the general market turns down here prior to Comey on Thursday. That level is strong support and today's low is "current support" and an interesting and more viable entry point. In any case, I would watch it going through lunch-time just the same. GL

Update: I should add, I'm watching it on the 3-minute chart and current support is at $ 11.17/shr and so we are testing that right now. Traders like to catch the stock at higher price levels when they are assured that the trend is decidedly bullish which is on a closing of $ 11.40/shr or higher so you could wait for that too. Just sit back and watch where we are right now as this is our battle for today. I would feel better if we could stay above $ 11.20/shr in the minutes ahead.

BlackBerry offers software for running computer systems on cars

The company declined to name any automakers who plan to use the technology, but senior BlackBerry executive John Wall said "multiple" car companies have started incorporating it into onboard computer systems of vehicles that are currently in development.

Looks like QNX hypervisor is now maturing. Crazy good stuff. And Toyota wants to play with AGL? Dumb decision. It will take them a few years to dig out from the mess they end up in.... Way behind other autos that made the right call.

    Morgan!
First off, keep up on the great work on the TA. You're consistent charts and analysis are invaluable and greatly appreciated here.

2nd, are you insinuating a lack of confidence in SPHS by staying in BBRY? Or are you that sure BBRY will keep following its uptrend? It may be dangerous to let your wife hold a substantially larger position in SPHS because that one could explode any day if dosing, results or a BO get announced. I for one will not let any of my SPHS shares go until we here something good from Randy Woods. Conversely, BBRY has been performing so well, it has been difficult not to take some chips off the table. I still have a large position, and will continue to hold until shares get closer to a level that Andrew Left or Gus P suggests they should be worth.

Now let's get to that $11.20 close so we can all sleep well knowing the chart is in tact. Cheers and GL to the gang!

    Thanks Mr BBRY!!

I cannot sell BBRY while it is performing so well. The more I make in BBRY, the more I can buy of SPHS. We already own tons of that one so this purchase is a formality just to win our investment bet. It's a sweeter win if I can do it using BBRY as she hates BlackBerry! I like them both, I can see BBRY going to $ 15.00/shr no problem in the months ahead and I think SPHS will remain quiet for a couple of more months so I'm trading the timing of news in both. With such high volumes these days, we are doing the equivalent of 50 trading days worth of trading above $ 11.00/shr when you factor in normal daily volumes for 2016.

Glad to hear you are all in, both investments look good and if Comey doesn't sink this market tomorrow, the market itself looks solid too. Best of luck!

Oh yeah, I was away this afternoon but I felt we were going to weaken going into noon so I wanted to be sure to get the word out that the stock could be a little cheaper later on today. Tomorrow the stock has to hold $ 11.00 in order for us to maintain that uptrend line so a $ 11.04/shr close does not look great now. We'll see.

BlackBerry on a familiar road as it fends off QNX software rivals
    Shane Dingman

A familiar pattern may be playing out for BlackBerry Ltd.’s commanding position in the automotive software market: Its QNX operating system is a clear market leader in advanced car software, but a number of rivals are threatening to catch up to its early lead.

To stay ahead of the competition, QNX is reaching deeper into car technology, focusing on the development of software that will be needed for everything from advanced driver-assistance systems to more fully-fledged self-driving cars.

On Wednesday, QNX Software Systems Ltd. announced a new “hypervisor” that would allow manufacturers to manage dozens of smaller software systems – to run everything from brakes to power windows – inside one BlackBerry-secured system. It’s the latest move to shift the company beyond its reliance on the infotainment screen business.

Growth in BlackBerry’s software business has been the lone bright spot over the past three years as it watched more than $1-billion in annual hardware revenue disappear. QNX’s work with car manufacturers, about 70 per cent of QNX’s total business, makes up a large part of that story.

Last week, Toyota Motor Corp., one of the world’s largest car companies, announced it was switching its EnTune infotainment system away from QNX over to an open-source standard called Automotive Grade Linux. Starting with the Camry in 2018, Toyota is planning on moving all its vehicles over to AGL.

“We had a small amount of business with them, it’s not anything major,” said John Wall, who heads the QNX division for BlackBerry. Mr. Wall criticized AGL’s open source structure, contrasting the foundation that runs its development with his own “professional software company.”

“My belief is it is very difficult for AGL to enter a safety-certified arena. Open source is always inherently less secure,” Mr. Wall said. “They picked a great name, Auto Grade Linux makes it sound like it’s something different.”

One outside analyst, however, said Toyota’s switch to AGL will have a long-term impact on QNX.

“It is a significant announcement that will impact QNX. AGL is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the next 5-10 years,” said Egil Juliussen, director of research and principal analyst for automotive technology at IHS Markit.

QNX has about 50 per cent market share now, with various flavours of Linux collecting another 20 per cent, Mr. Juliussen said.

He predicts QNX’s share will shrink as more of the car market adds in-dash screens. QNX accounts for 15 million to 20 million “units” in cars today, in a market that shipped 93 million cars last year. By 2020, when car shipments are predicted to pass 100 million a year, IHS expects all but the lowest-end vehicles will ship with infotainment units.

BlackBerry doesn’t break out numbers on QNX’s performance, but analysts such as Steven Li of Raymond James peg the division as adding about $110-million in revenue, or about 8 per cent to the company’s $1.3-billion in revenue for fiscal 2017. Crucially, QNX is part of the software growth story, and represents 17 per cent of BlackBerry’s roughly $635-million in software revenue.

Mr. Li and Mr. Juliussen agree that QNX is on a path to transition from its current mainline business of powering in-dash screens to providing more advanced systems.

Mr. Wall would not confirm how many auto partners are developing with the new hypervisor – “multiple” is as far as he would go – but said the long production cycle of car makers means it could be 2020 before significant numbers of new cars leave the factory packed with more QNX software.

Mr. Li projected BlackBerry could begin earning as much as $130-million a year in those new systems by 2020, even as it loses as much as 30 per cent of its infotainment business.

The increasing competition in auto, with solutions backed by such well-heeled rivals as Google Inc., Intel Corp. and China’s Baidu aiming to grab its customers, means QNX now faces a situation remarkably similar to BlackBerry’s painful experience in the smartphone market. But analysts are betting that BlackBerry has learned the lesson of its history.

The Waterloo, Ont., company’s stock price rose last week on a bullish report from short-seller Citron Research that suggested the company was ripe for takeover, not least because of QNX’s growing role in the auto market. But that case does not require QNX to own the market, merely to be a significant player in it. “You cannot expect [BlackBerry] to power all cars. As long as [it] sticks to course they will be OK,” said Citron’s Andrew Left.
