On a business trip to China, I was observing how iPhones were often sought as status symbols and a bit as a showoff item. Local Chinese made products also providing excellent hardware quality. The following opinion article adding to this:

Why Apple Is Letting Oppo and Vivo Win in China - Nasdaq.com
"Apple's shipments in China fell by 23% last year to 44.9 million units. That left it in fourth place with a 9.6% share of the market. While Apple posted its first-ever annual decline in iPhone sales last year, it still cleaned up in terms of profitability. For 2016, Apple captured an incredible 79% of global smartphone industry profits with just 14.5% market share. Apple probably earns at least $300 of profit on each high-end smartphone it sells in China. In order to appeal to more cost-conscious consumers, it would have to either offer a cheaper, lower-quality iPhone model or create a lower-priced iPhone with all (or nearly all) the same bells and whistles as its flagship devices. If Apple were earning $50 in profit per phone sold in China due to price cuts, it would need to sell six times as many iPhones as it does now just to make the same amount of profit. The iPhone functions as a status symbol in China, so it's not that surprising that many consumers aspire to trade up to the iPhone when they can afford one."

Personal comment: My BB Passport was also recognized as a business and security item, by the technology and scientific crowd I was hanging around with. Note that anything Google was not working in China during my October trip, something about not having government approvals...

I really care about what Chen has to say for guidance
Now that the strategy is set *for good* (re: externalize the HW totally) that's something I really expect besides the usual might-may-should-rounded estimations. Clear goals and achievements are required now.

Would rather think they are simply different component keypads.

As we go into the ER, I am reminded of this report by Daniel Chan, from TD Securities.

Hope some of his analysis plays itself out and we learn more about the three growth pillars.

    Hi folks,

    Just for record,

I drew a couple of lines on three charts. I dare not say anything because I don't want to jinx it. Please do not comment on this before ER comes out. I am pretty sure not just me that are staring these every day lately.

A very superficial article but hey, its some good news:

    "BlackBerry KeyOne: Killer Keyboard

    April; $549

BlackBerry lives! Now owned by TCL, the iconic brand is back in a new premium Android phone that combines a very smart keyboard with top-notch security. While the screen is a bit small at 4.5 inches, the keyboard does some pretty awesome things. You can long press to launch your favorite apps, flick up on the keyboard to accept suggestions to speed up typing and even use it as a touchpad for scrolling through emails or websites. Bonus: the space bar doubles as the fingerprint reader.
