People seem to forget that he doesn't only have access to his personal wealth.

Some people also seem to forget that it's possible to sell stock, sometimes when it's high, and thereby squirrel it away elsewhere so that a drop in the price of a company doesn't mean your net worth is suddenly wiped out.

Some people also seem to forget that someone like Mike could afford to hire competent financial advisors, even if he's not bright enough to figure that out himself.

Some people also really aren't worth the time it's taking to respond to them.

Exactly! Makes much more sense for them to have one bid together, instead of competing and driving the price higher. I think that's what they are going to do.

Step 1: PW and ML compete to purchase the company
Step 2: Industry competitor steps in with formal bid
Step 3: PW and ML become allies and sweeten the offer
Step 4: Industry competitor offers final price, with approval from PW and ML representing +- 18% of the shareholders

It's highly unlikely that Prem Watsa bought his stock on the last business day of each quarter-end (= of each reporting period, which is the price used by this website to calculate average cost). It's more likely that his purchases were spread over multiple weeks. Knowing how volatile BlackBerry has been, it makes sense his cost is 17 dollars / share. He mentioned this in one of his investors letters. I don't believe he has increased his holdings ever since..

If you do the analysis yourself (via gurufocus.com), and take the average price of BBRY over a certain quarter, you'll end up with a figure close to the 17 dollars/share. I remember doing this exercise 1-1.5 years ago

Guys read the note that goes with the chart. It is the "price of the security on the portfolio date." I am going to bet all of M+8's money PW is still at 17 and that the note means they merely used a set date for all holdings in the portfolio. For example an end of quarter date, in this case 30 Jun 2013. Stupid and misleading way to do it, but I think I am reading it correctly.

The $17 is what he said in the FF shareholders letter. I assumed he would have mentioned any hedges he had in place. Also really bad form for a director to hedge like that too...
