- PALM invented the smartphone (Treo 180 launched on October 15, 2001). PALM was foolishly bought by HP when they overpaid $1.2B for it. BBRY currently has a market cap of $4.5B at a share price of $8.73. if they keep burning cash and the death spiral accelerates (which i think it will) i could see BBRY drop to $1.2B or less - comparable to what HP paid for PALM - and BBRY share price will be $2.33. you read that right - $2.33/share - which could be considered optimistic.
HP paid $1.2B for PALM and then it cost them at least $1.7B to shut it down. that's about $3B down the drain - getting close to BBRY's current market cap.
it could cost $1-$2B to shut BB operations down, hardware and brand is near worthless, and cash is burning - so all you have left is patents and a decaying tarnished dying antiquated enterprise business. and how much could these "magical" patents be worth when Google and Apple are already beating BB silly without them?
what's the difference between PALM and BBRY? have not any potential acquirers learned from HP's foolish PALM acquisition?Last edited by Gekko; 09-22-13 at 09:22 AM.
09-22-13 09:04 AMLike 0 - Either I missed something or BlackBerry is not quitting hardware. They will still provide hardware, aimed to "prosumers" and enterprise. That's one very important point. Bought devices will remain maintained and softwares updated.
While there will probably no more "marketing" aimed to the consumers, those willing to keep BlackBerry as their preferred devices will be able to.

- This applies to me too. I work more than 10 hours a day in the lab, lecture hall, conferences, etc. I don't get to talk to 'normal' people often enough. Holding a nice conversation with people outside my field is hard for me. So, on the weekends I would walk around my neighborhood and greet people "yo, what hanging dude?" They looked at me strangely because they knew that I am a professor (stereotyping). But when the chitchat starts, I struggle to hang on. One time a neighbor asked "what exactly are you working on?" After 10 mins of me yapping away, he looked over to his wife and said 'Liz, you got a BS in chemistry, do you understand what he is saying?" She tried to brushed him off and embarrassingly shuck her head. At that point I stopped and said "basically, I am trying to find a way to slow or stop our brain from decaying as we get old."
I struggle to talk with my team (mostly PhD students and Postdocs) too, so I use a lot of diagrams, imagery, metaphors, etc., ( such as the Viagra cartoon I posted here) but it's tough...09-22-13 09:18 AMLike 0 -
Good morning guys. Cheer up. It is a brand new day.09-22-13 09:25 AMLike 5 - Has anyone heard fromt the QNX people, in particular Dan Dodge? Around the Playbook launch it seemed to me he took a somewhat visible stance and stood behind the product with a couple of interviews. Since then, can't find anything.
This might shed some light on the dynamics inside the company (which I think has been loaded with management from communications firm and carriers so at the end of the day would not surprise me if a communications firm buys the NOC or BBM and Mike L, Watsa and Dodge pick up the BES and QNX).09-22-13 09:40 AMLike 0 - Has anyone heard fromt the QNX people, in particular Dan Dodge? I wanted to make a short statement about the movement that everyone is talking about, that is, the move to a new location to talk about BBRY and/or other stocks. I can assure you, that we are going to be posting to this thread as long as the mods can and are able to keep it open. There aren't many venues out there where we can meet and talk about BBRY, post links, post charts, post virtual pics of beer and the like as we are allowed to do at this site. I for one won't be giving that up as long as Branta and BergerKing are willing to help us out here. I can tell you that my "ignore list" will be getting much longer in the days ahead as this is our own way of shutting out the nonsense posts.
I do want to say that having had talks with both Branta and Bergerking yesterday, some it related to my behaviour, I came away believing that they are 100% committed to this thread and I want to assure them that we want to be here too. Thanks to them for working so hard to deal with our issues on this thread.
We don't have some magical place to go to right now, but we are collecting names in case we lose this thread as we want to continue the interest in BBRY, and stock in general here. So please continue to post to this thread so we know you are interested in BBRY and I can assure you I'll continue to be here every day as always. Our goal is to have a place to talk about owning BBRY stock, not Apple or any other competitior of BBRY, we want to focus on this one and have some fun along the way. And so the process is the same, place people who are rude on "ignore", report them to the mods if you feel they are excessively rude and continue to encourage new CB members to join our thread. If things get difficult and we're not able to continue to use this thread, we do want to have something else to go to but I can assure you it will be nothing as nice as what we have right now. I can't respond to every request that has been made on this thread, my mailbox is always full lately, so don't be offended if I haven't personally talked to you. Just know that we are on this thread until it is closed. Monday is a big day so let's get ready for it! Best of luck.09-22-13 09:52 AMLike 27 -
- No, it is an excellent real time operating system. The problem is that iOS and Android are built on Darwin (BSD/Mach based) and Linux both of which provide an equally good platform for a smart phone OS. QNX confers no special advantage in this space. Anyone who claims it does is spouting marketing nonsense.09-22-13 09:59 AMLike 0

I agree, it would be nice to talk about bbry in this thread without the intolerant users calling 'troll' anyone with a different opinion. There are many places in the internet where is easy to create your selective community. I can recommend you Google Groups, Google+ communities or Facebook groups, in those places you can select the members.
I encourage you to do it.09-22-13 10:04 AMLike 3 - No, it is an excellent real time operating system. - So it wasn't a complete loss for me. Fortunately my sell order executed as soon as the market reopened, down $1 from my buy. On the plus side I had some $10 puts ($CAD) that would have expired worthless on Friday that suddenly became very profitable. I did also have some calls that expired worthless so in the end, still in Red but could have been much worse.
I have some Jan calls in case of BO but 0 common stock any more. Looking to move the money elsewhere, perhaps AMD?09-22-13 10:07 AMLike 10 - I'm out for the record but will stay on the sidelines, watch and asses. Just a flawed assumption to make that some of us who support the other perspective are blind and don't accept any counter arguments. That's not true at all. You can go back to my messages and see that.09-22-13 10:13 AMLike 6

- It will be a political headache if Canada approves a sale and then buyer X guts the workforce by 70%. They have to do it now while they are still "Canadian."
