Off topic, but just wanted to comment quickly so that readers here are not mislead.
Most of life altering discoveries are made by government funded academic research labs at Universities around the world, not by private companies. Look at the people awarded Nobel prizes for discoveries that changed the world. Most of them run a government funded research lab. Next time you walk into a hospital, try to find a single piece of technology or drug that was not first discovered in a government funded lab. Perhaps it's easier to relate if you ask who funded the invention of the internet? How about the CCD chip that enables your camera to take pictures. I can tell you with 100% confidence that if the US loses it's academic research it will no longer be competitive.

BTW, why don't you go to any innovative private sector and ask them if they would like the government to stop funding research. I am a consultant for a few pharmaceutical companies. They all rely heavy on academic discoveries.

Look up the discovery of PDE5 and it's inhibitors. Viagra is only one of the inhibitors and not the first, just a better one.

Edit: I won't ask why you chose Viagra LOL...

    Greetings,

A friend of mine who works with Shared services Canada, confirmed they were well on their way of testing and assessing the BB10 platform, and that acceptance was coming soon.
Don't take this as official news, but it is what it is so I thought I would share. Most of the people I know working as public servants in Canada are still on the Torch or the bold, and they cannot wait to get the Q10.
Public servants? Ha! In the USA public servants refuse to be called this. Long ago our police cars had "protect and serve" on them but no more. We really work for them now.

    Interesting interview with Misek.

I agree sell off the handset business, license the OS, and keep the NOC. Develop software for enterprises and mobile.

    Come on BlackBerry.

    Posted via CB10
If 70% of BB business is smartphones.... doesn't getting rid (don't believe there are buyers for it) of that portion of the business make you a much less valuable company? How would not having hardware affect those other sectors - NOC, MDM, and still supporting enterprise?

Looks like you can cross Dell off your list.
We're focused on enterprise, not mobile phones: Michael Dell

Tuition rose at 2-3x the rate of inflation for many years because of the "free" and "easy" money provided for by government guaranteed student loans. It is EXACTLY like the housing bubble. Flood the market with cash, prey on unsuspecting buyers, give them credit and poof, the price goes way up. Wash, rinse, repeat. JMHO....
I really hate to go off topic, but can't let this one go.
REALLY? You are blaming a government program designed to help kids get educated and paralleled it with the sub-prime housing bubble designed and conducted by shady bankers?
FYI, the student loan program in Canada is far more generous than the US, yet tuition fees in Canadian universities are about one tenth of the US.

Anyone smarter than me care to express an opinion on Lessons Learned from the Dell privatization experience, which could be of benefit to BB investors:
Dell cleared to go private for $24.9B after shareholders vote in favor of deal | ZDNet
    Good morning Rarsen!!

This response to your question by no means suggests I know any more than you do my friend. I have to be brief so here are my thoughts on Dell and how BB differs in many ways.

Dell has declining metrics at every level, but, their sector is only dropping at the rate of 10%/annum so Dell has something that BBRY is void of and that is time to turn itself into a better company. Having said that, $ 24 B is a ton of money to risk on a business turn-a-round! Dell went out at 2.26/BV or for those who aren't up on accounting, its Price (of stock) to it's intrinsic value or Book Value is at a multiple of 2.26 times. In contract, BBRY is trading at .56 x Book Value and I would argue that BBRY's BV is fact-based and not inflated. And so the "premium" that one would pay for BBRY should at least equal BV plus or minus 20% and this means that a target for a acquisition might finalize around $ 15.00 - $ 22.00 bucks.

My take is that a complete sale of the company is not in shareholders best interest. Here is way. I see the handset business worth at least $ 2.5 B and that portion of the business could include some licensing of patents for another $ 1 B over the next few years. The cash would amount to $ 3.5 B or $ 7.00/shr giving the company $ 13.00/shr in cash, plus a profitable business model; immediately. There is nothing in Dell that would allow the private owners the same opportunity as does BBRY. It doesn't end here, if Apple and/or Samsung decide to stay out of the bidding, it will come back to bite them. Those assets are everything one needs to compete at their level. The only thing BBRY is missing is a phone that is extremely low cost to make. Others can provide the missing link here thus I see plenty of upside in BBRY.

When was the last time you paid more than BV for anything? I never would, unless I thought there was something hidden in the asset that makes it special in a redefined/packaged format. Dell went out at 2.26, look at NOK, they went out at a premium too, and now, have a look at the after math of severing your lost leader:

The BBRY Café. [Formerly: I support BBRY and I buy shares!]-nok-sept-13-2013-chart.jpg

The stock is going ballistic here, it is well above its RSI = 70 levels and climbing every day. This is what would happen to BlackBerry if they cut hardware and went software, a ton of cash, instantly profitable, able to purchase their competition and they have BBM-X on top of all of this! By keeping their patents, they would have re-occurring revenues and a chance to launch another hardware device down the road. They have so much more exciting possibilities before them than Dell ever will. Dell equates to manufacturing of PC's and tablets, a commodity. BBRY has the best security in the world today and their icing is BBM-X.

    Just my thoughts thank you!

    cj!

Of course, you are a guy, so you know I had to "sneak" onto my PC to do this. I needed a distraction this morning because I can't lay down any longer, the room is leaning to the left! The operation was scrapped after 20 - 30 minutes ?? due to some infection, I was opened up and closed with some hardware (not a BlackBerry Z30 or QNX product) inserted to protect the area and closed again. We were so disappointed that I asked to go home last night and got clearance later on. I can only have so many attempts at this surgery (2 at the most) before the scarring does some serious damage, so we elected to postpone it for 3 months and see if the risks would abate. So after all of the waiting, putting my family through a ton of anxiety, I have another 5 inch slice, 16 staples and a very bad haircut to show for it!

I'll post when I need another distraction!

You are so right w4rrior, I do think the combination of BB 10.2 plus BBM-X will get some positive press and hopefully a new beginning for BlackBerry. Those BBM-X activation data points might be just what BB needs to put a positive spin on their growth. I'm actually more excited about these two items than I am about take-over rumours. I want BBRY to exist, not go private nor be sold off. The media is fixated on BBRY being up for sale as CJ mentions, I don't see it that way at all. The wait is killing me, I want to hear about the launch/uptake of BBM damn it.

I'm so ticked off right now, I can't stop to think about this setback, my wife had to leave the room when my Doc told her it was called off. She is not handling these problems well, she needs to open an account with CB and start posting here too! Anyway, I'll post a bit and go stare at the beers in the fridge that I can't have until late next week.
