The "Rule of Three" explains the smartphone market perfectly | ZDNet

In any one market, the authors discovered that typically three market leaders will emerge. They call these the "Big 3". Think of any market and you can likely name three winners. Walmart, Target are the two at the top, with perhaps Walgreens as the third. How about American Airlines, United, and Delta. Want some more close to home? Lenovo, Dell, and HP.

These Big 3 are generalists and take up between 70 percent and 90 percent of the market between them. To be sustainable as a generalist, the authors say you need 10 percent of the market. Typically the Big 3 end up with 40 percent, 20 percent and 10 percent of the market respectively.

The Big 3 generalists in the smartphone market today are -- in the first two places -- Apple and Samsung. Then we have a fight for third place between Nokia and BlackBerry.

The Rule of Three tells us what's happened to BlackBerry. They fell into the ditch. Their market share got so small that they were unable to compete with the other generalists in the market and so now they are floundering. But the authors' work tells us what they need to do -- re-frame themselves as a specialist. Specialists provide for higher margins to allow for lower sales.

    Premarket: Stocks in retreat as Wal-Mart disappoints . . . . . .

Global stock markets are in retreat this morning, with selling in U.S. stock futures intensifying as a slew of U.S. economic reports were released.

Among them were U.S. jobless claims, which dropped to the lowest level since October 2007 - an indication that the U.S. Federal Reserve may very well start to cut back on its $85-billion (U.S.) bond-buying program starting next month. The Fed has tied the reduction of stimulus measures to the health of the nation's employment.

Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, this morning reduced its full-year earnings forecast, a signal that consumer spending is still on the sluggish side. There were some weak earnings released overnight in Europe as well.

Some numbers: The 156 million Android phone sales in the first quarter of this year were made up of one big player, Samsung, and a lot of small players, with the five most-successful selling around 10 million phones each. With those kinds of figures, sticking to their own operating system should sound more attractive to BlackBerry and Nokia than ever.

Beware when the hype for the "Sale of Blackberry" wears off and no buyers step up. When BBRY reacts to that will be a good time to buy.

This is the second time your repeated this. You can say it 100 more times if it makes you feel better. BlackBerry is going private, bought out or will partner. This is 100% going to happen. This also won't happen over night. Smart money is covering telling dumb money not to worry.

With the low volume and no news here, the stock is performing really quite well. Constant higher lows and a good trend up.... of course all this can be wiped out in one fell swoop but nice to see it doing well technically.

The -BlackBerry failed, now is for sale- headlines are doing a big damage to the already troubled core business. So, I think two scenarios are more probable:

1)The deal is already done and the uncertainty will last just a few weeks.

2)The business deteriorated faster than expected, nobody made and offer in a year, so now It's considered practically dead. The uncertainty doesn't make a difference, nobody is adopting BB10 and BES10 anyways.
This second call is for people interested in some assets, and for them It's a good idea to wait a couple of awful quarters until is shareholders acknowledge that the business is dead and they have to accept a deal for the parts to recover some value, at a much lower price of course.
