Why did tsla have a big short interest?
First-quarter results in 2012 showed a per-share loss of 76 cents. Looked like the company was going to sit stagnant for quite a while. Until the improved performance increased production and sales of its second vehicle, the Model S, which is the company's first mass-produced offering. During the first quarter, Tesla sold and delivered more than 98% of the Model S sedans it produced. This helped push revenue to $562 million for the period (an 83% improvement from fourth-quarter 2012). In addition to sales of the Model S, Tesla saw increased revenue from sales of battery packs and electric power trains to Toyota and revenue from alternative vehicle development with Mercedes-Benz.

Icahn clearly said at the end of the interview (and I paraphrase) "I think to be short a company in this market, with any kind of positive fundamentals, is foolish" - Someone have the exact phrasing?
I think it was closer to: "I think to short millions of shares of a company in this market and then to publicly announce it is foolhardy. "

Go look at the balance sheet and cash flow statement. The thing is trading like dot com used to trade.

I was hearing that it was now a more valuable company than Fiat? I don't think so. Fundamentals out of whack means that their sales either go up exponentially or they are in for a rude awakening in my opinion. (from a valuation stand point)

Or the computer system that they use does. Remember, there aren't people saying "hey look... it's at 16. We'd better sell some to keep it down a couple of cents".

They need to increase revs by more than 10x, stop diluting shareholders and turn FCF positive. Then and only then does today's market cap make sense.

This is well researched...another SA article:

BlackBerry: How A Vocal Bear Stealthily Increased His Forecasts

Disclosure: I am long BBRY. (More...)

BlackBerry (BBRY) is one of the most heavily shorted stocks, with short interest of over 164 million shares on NASDAQ, representing about 33% of BlackBerry's free float. There have also been many arguments from analysts on both sides of the debate about BlackBerry's future prospects. One thing that has gone unnoticed though is how one of the most vocal bearish analysts has been stealthily increasing his forecasts. We are going to look at a timeline of those forecasts to show how even bearish sentiment has subtly changed in a positive manner for BlackBerry. Then we are going to look at a couple of possible contributing factors to explain why forecasts may have increased, and why we think there they are still too low.
