The USAF is currently using the Fixmo Sentinel solution for device integrity verification and mobile device management (MDM) as part of its AFSPC-led mobile device initiative. Fixmo Sentinel helps the USAF secure their mobile devices while ensuring they start, and remain, in a known trusted state and within compliance with mobile security guidelines led by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA).

The USAF has also deployed the Fixmo SafeZone secure workspace and application containerization solution on iPads and iPhones in an effort to move beyond just using the smart devices for e-mail, calendar, and contacts. Fixmo SafeZone provides a managed secure container environment with CAC-enabled e-mail, secure browser, an office-like document management suite, secure camera, Microsoft SharePoint access and the ability to integrate custom applications.

"We are trying to move from a mindset of locking down the native side of the device to ensure network security, to using the secure container as the interface to the AFNET and letting the user enjoy the benefits of the native portion of the device. Under the CRADA, the USAF is also evaluating Fixmo Secure Gesture as a potential alternative to smart card technology for advanced user authentication on mobile devices without the need for custom hardware or external readers. "Fixmo Secure Gesture is an exciting new technology that has the potential to revolutionize user authentication on mobile devices," said Bruce Gilley, President of Fixmo U.S. "Not only is it more secure and tougher to crack than traditional alphanumeric passcodes, but it is also easier to use and a fraction of the cost of traditional multi-factor authentication solutions. Samsung Venture Investment Corp. (005930) bought a stake in Canadian security software maker Fixmo Inc. to extend the Asian company�s growth with business and government clients traditionally served by Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM)
Samsung Ventures, which invests on behalf of Suwon, South Korea-based smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co. and other parts of the Samsung group of companies, is making the investment in return for a �small� equity stake, Fixmo Chief Executive Officer Rick Segal said in a phone interview. He declined to disclose exactly how much Samsung invested. Nam Ki Yung, a spokesman for Samsung Electronics, declined to comment.
The investment shows that �Samsung is getting very serious about taking on RIM in their own backyard, in government and enterprise,� Segal, who founded Fixmo, said yesterday. RIM is based in Waterloo, Ontario.
Samsung is looking to replicate the success it�s had with consumers among businesspeople as more workers use their own devices instead of company-issued phones. Operating profit at Samsung, the biggest maker of devices on Google Inc. (GOOG)�s Android platform, jumped 89 percent last quarter to 8.8 trillion won ($8.3 billion), paced by sales of its Galaxy smartphones.
RIM is counting on its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones, set to debut Jan. 30, to trigger a wave of upgrades from lawyers, bankers and public servants faithful to their BlackBerrys. The company was poised to finish 2012 with a 4.7 percent share of the global smartphone market, hurt by an aging smartphone lineup, market researcher IDC said last month. Android had about 68 percent market share.
RIM is also wooing companies with features such as BlackBerry Balance, which allows users to operate two versions of their device for work and personal life that separately quarantine e-mail, applications and other data.
Security Software
Fixmo sells security software including Sentinel and SafeZone it has developed with the U.S. National Security Agency to bolster device safety. The Toronto-based company secured $23 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 2011 and has secured more than $40 million in investment to date, Segal said.
�Samsung is looking at companies like us to give them insight but more importantly to lay down those strategic markers in areas like security and storage,� he said.

While BlackBerry was going through its darkest days last year, two things kept coming up as important distinguishers of its product; its keyboard and the Zen-like obsession the company has maintained with security. The combo kept important elected officials worldwide, including Barack Obama, stick with the Waterloo-based company we used to know as RIM.
Now, a company in its own backyard wants to end that.

Last week, Toronto�s Fixmo, a firm that specializes in mobile data security, announced a partnership with American security specialist MobileIron, promising that because of their partnership, �government agencies can confidently move beyond BlackBerry and give users the ability to choose the devices that will make them most productive.�

Fixmo recently rolled out a smart phone security service for Android users, who can sign up for Fixmo SafeWatch�s Beta program for one year at no charge. At the end of the trial, the service will be offered to the general public as a paid service. SafeWatch software has already been in use in Hong Kong since December, when mobile telecom carrier 3 Hong Kong implemented it as part of that company�s suite of security options for their smart phone users.

Samsung Venture Investment Corp chose both Fixmo and Boston-based Cloudant to invest in earlier this year. US-based Cloudant is funded in part by the CIA, which bears out MobileIron�s claim that �federal agencies had very limited choice for mobility.� He means BlackBerry. As the United States government adopts more flexible BYOD policies companies like Fixmo stand to benefit.

The DoD is looking at all brands and platforms this year and there will be many research projects going on trying to get this CMD model founded. Since the DoD is such a prominent organization, every organization that gets a shot is going to be publishing and announcing it to better their case and cause. I didn't include the form they have to fill out that has required data information or the link to where it goes b cause there is classified requirements on it I can't pass on. I just don't want to see people getting their hope up or sit there waiting for some contract announcement that isn't coming. We'll see lots of announcements now from companies bragging they are working with getting DoD, but most of them will be kicked to the curb after the DoD is finished with them. Now, time for a fresh beer.
