Why Blackberry's Momentum Has Turned Around

    Any thoughts on this post?

The MAJOR short hedge fund on BBRY is MAVERICK CAP - BlackBerry - BB

Maverick Capital is the major short player behind the shorting of BlackBerry. They nearly went bankrupt in 2003 when shorting BlackBerry as it was beginning to flourish. They thought they could finish the job on BBRY by paying off analysts to write false stores about phones being returned, underwhelming shipment numbers, UK Gov't contracts not being renewed, etc. All of it a complete lie in order for them to raid the stock illegally (colloquially referred to as a bear raid).

What Maverick Capital, and other short players do not understand fully, is that 34.5% if the FLOAT is SHORT. Free float is 484M shares, and institutional ownership has increased SUBSTANTIALLY. I am aware of a collective effort going on by long hedge funds, money managers, and intitutions across America, Canada, UK, and the world, to slowly accumulate these shares at these price levels. The institutional ownership of this stock is now will north of 80%.

The reason volume has fallen so drastically is very simple: very few are now selling; and, shares are VERY difficult to borrow short with a 10% negative rebate. Here is how the story ends: BlackBerry continues to thrive and and ships a massive amount of devices in Q1. EPS will be over $1.00/share. There will be a massive squeeze in this stock in the coming weeks or months. The term "massive" can't even describe the lasting effects. Maverick Capital, and it's "friends" shorting BBRY will be out of ammo. SEC already has their eye on them and things will not turn out well for them, just as things will not turn out well for Jeff Johnston of Detwiler Fenton. White-collar crimes are punishable with some very strict sentences (10+ yrs if found convicted)

In closing, I'd just like to say, Maverick Capital, it's over. You have lost. You are now cornered by institutional longs. Insolvency is on your doorstep. Criminal charges are at your window.

    Long, BBRY

    bla bla bla
    Yawn .....

    Not even worth responding to.

Go look at BBRY from a FCF and balance sheet perspecitve along with prospects for growth going forward. It is the very root as to why I invested in BBRY and avoid Apple (which has a low PE because most of it's cash grows at 3% annually via low risk investments)

That Maverick Captial thing. What proof is there to any of this?

I agree with everything in the article. Except the validity of Maverick Capital being the primary short of BBRY. I also doubt that 80% of hte stock will ever be tied up in long hands that won't sell.

Could any one investor/ fund be dumb enough to try to take down the BlackBerry stock by themselves?

The 80% institution ownership is possible I suppose.

As much as Id like to believe it it sounds like mostly BS. You think that a fund that is trying to short Bbry doesnt realize the percentage of the float that is short? Of couse they would it is public info. After that statement its hard to give credibility to the rest.

There are an awful lot of bad news stories out about BBRY this evening...looks like the bears are mounting another attack. With the low volume, they may try to take us into the low $13s, high $12s by the end of the week.

I'm not selling this time though, I'd rather just buy more when/if it happens again.

This makes no sense to me. Why would maverick be long on a components manufacturer, and try to damage one of their customers by excessively shorting their stock ?

I think it is suspect and he tips his hand by saying they are the ones who paid off analysts and they they "do not understand fully, is that 34.5% if the FLOAT is SHORT. Free float is 484M shares." Maybe they did pay off someone, but surely they figured out the float situation. You don't get access to that much capital by being stupid and not doing your homework. You can guess wrong, but surely they know what the float is. He claims to have access to major hedge funds and internal SEC actions. All of what is written could be true, but it is suspect in my mind b/c of these simplistic statements. (S)he seems angry and vindictive. That doesn't make him/her wrong though.

This market is so weird. On the one hand, BBRY is traded below its tangible book value and .45% projected revenue and PE of less than 8. On the other hand, NFLX is being traded now with infinity ratio of its tangible BK (which is negative) and 3X its projected revenue and PE of 100.
Just to put my mouth on the money, I short NFLX at $220 at the AH.
To my knowledge tech stocks typically trade anywhere between 2 - 5x revenues depending on growth potential.

Example: After today's AH move, the market cap of NFLX is north of $12B with it making approximately $4B in revs/yr. Therefore, NFLX is trading at 3x revs

BlackBerry is currently trading at 0.5x TTM revenues. Irrational? You be the judge.

He was asked at his shareholder meeting. He is not running around preaching this. Price follows value. In the short term, the markets are a voting machine, in the long term a weighing machine. Yadda. Yadda. Yadda.

BBRY as a stock isn't as fun to watch during the intermissions and lulls. It's the calm before the storm, yes, but still boring.

In the meantime, I'd like to see them throw some love towards the PlayBook. I need my PB running well to keep me entertained during the lulls and the last two updates feel like they phoned it in.

Blackberry Z10 Very IT Friendly Phone 0 comments
    Apr 22, 2013 11:44 AM | about stocks: BBRY
The VASCO two-factor authentication app has been released for Z10 and works perfectly. The Z10 has a CISCO VPN client which includes the Group Authentication feature. It works very well and connects lightning fast to CISCO VPN. If you also download FreeBSSH you can ssh to linux servers from your Z10. Another app, FreebVNC allows me to connect to my Ubuntu Linux desktop, and the ERICON Access to Go app allows me to remote desktop from my Z10 to an RDP session on a Windows desktop. The Neutrino Real-Time Operating System (Neutrino RTOS) aka BB10 OS is nearly flawless and I have never had to reboot the phone in the 5 weeks I have owned it. Regarding the map app that comes with the phone, despite some negative comments, I like it enormously. It has voice turn-by-turn navigation, and it has the 3/4 birds-eye view display, and personally, I like it. All-in-all I find this phone to be a phone that IT employees with find very useful, since you can use it to login to ssh sessions and desktops. As to whether this phone will gain traction with average consumers, that is very much an open and unanswered question. The app store is still very much imho severely lacking important apps such as true "built-for-blackberry" banking and equities trading platform apps. It has precious few banking apps of any kind at all. There are no USA banking apps, and only Scotia Bank and CIBC bank were in there for Canada (as of April 22) and the reviews for these were mixed, with some claiming that these are only link-type apps to their mobile sites, and not true "built-for-blackberry" apps. Chase Bank has desupported ALL Blackberry devices, and the announcement of that was not a hoax, as some might have thought, as my Torch 9810 began reporting a message that Chase no longer supports ANY Blackberry products as of yesterday (April 21). Chase is the largest US Bank by assets, so this does not help. I love the Z10 and I am keeping mine - the release of the VASCO app was huge for any IT employees planning to use this phone - but the BB10 OS still has a BIG problem with lack of consumer-focused apps. Z10 is going to suffer in consumer markets because of this problem of lack of consumer-focused key apps such as banking and stock/investment trading. I was bullish on the stock in the fall and winter, and recently shifted to bearish. Now I'm on the sidelines altogether because it's just really hard to see which way this stock is going to go in the near term. The BB10 OS is a great, great engineered platform, but the consumer acceptance issue is going to tell a big part of the financial side of the evolving Blackberry story, and the results are still out on that one.

BBRY: AT&T And GM To Bring 4G LTE In-Car Starting In 2014 3 comments
    Feb 25, 2013 7:48 AM | about stocks: BBRY
AT&T just stole the in-Car wireless contract to bring 4G LTE for GM and OnStar from suddenly-out-of-the-picture Verizon Wireless. OnStar is QNX-powerwed, and QNX is a Blackberry property. Already in pre-market trading Blackberry is up over 4%.
    The Detroit News
    www.detroitnews.com/article/20130225/AUT.../
As Blackberry fans may know, AT&T has been by far the most loyal Blackberry carrier, currently listed as the only source for legacy (Bold, Torch) phones, and a prime soon-to-be distributor of QNX-era Blackberry phones (Z10, Q10, et. al).
In view of the extensive QNX concept cars shown at CES 2012 (Porsche 911) and 2013 (Bentley Continental) and QNX long-established position as a core technology partner to GM OnStar (as well as integration in many other car makes) this naturally will lead to a large uptick in BBRY shares today (predicted).
Potential market for 4G LTE equipped cars is in the millions. Also, early comments indicate 4G LTE in-car apps will be largely if not totally implemented in HTML5, which Blackberry QNX-based phones already lead (485 score on HTML5 test, compared to 386 for iPhone).
There is much talk that there will be an Android-HTML5 interface so the news seems to be a big win for BBRY due to it's full ownership of QNX and a peripheral big win for Android. Bodes badly for Apple left out of the picture along with it's buddy Verizon, and also bodes badly for the future of Apple's application store concept, since it is clear now that Blackberry intends to wage a fight based on the premise which they have bet heavily on that seamless app integration across car and mobile device is going to be HTML5 standardized.
Cheers Blackberry Faithful! This day, we fight!
    Disclosure: I am long BBRY.
Additional disclosure: Call options, heavily leveraged.

I don't get why blackberry doesn't make more with QNX in cars. How does it work? Do the car manufacturers pay them a licensing fee for each car? That has to be pretty substantial revenue no?
