I am a big fan of TA and have incorporated into my trading strategies for over 25 years, with much success. But to those new to TA I say an emphatic "caveat emptor": There is no magic in TA and well-established patterns can be trumped, as morganplus8 states, by news at any moment. And the bigger the news the more likely it is able to affect the stock price and with greater magnitude (in either direction--good news generally causing an increase in share price and bad news doing the opposite; depending on the trend leading up to that news, there could be a continuation pattern or a technical reversal). If you believe that no news is likely to affect the stock then you can place more "trust" in the patterns you see. In general, I think the most informed trader is the one who combines fundamental analysis and technical analysis; I also feel that TA is especially good when trying to determine when to enter a trade or when to exit and I often set limit orders based on what the charts tell me is a reasonable enter/exit price. TA can also help in determining how much time will likely pass before a certain price is reached--and that's especially useful when trading options.

You are absolutely spot on here, can you provide some charts for the group please? It is always nice to see what others are seeing in the patterns these days. The second point that I would make is that there is so much more to TA then we present to this thread today. I couldn't possibly post to the board, all of the changes in the trade as they occur, not enough time in a day for that! Thanks and be sure to help us out here.

That's a great question! The allure of TA is the chance to make additional money during times when there is no news as well as times when you need to know what computers are looking at for an entry or an exit point. To say, "I want o buy at $ 12.00/shr this time around" is foolish when it clearly means the stock is going to collapse. And so you need a method of figuring out what the trade will look like when the big players step in. I provide the TA because I don't see many others doing the same, over time we can develop the pattern and fine tune it to work for our trading purposes. I was concerned earlier today when we dropped below my uptrend line, but in the end, it didn't violate my TA at all. I had to see the pattern complete itself in order to confirm that my trends still are valid.

As you can see, we formed a perfect Inverse Head & Shoulders Pattern, it was then followed by a rally very near the 5-dma which is our target in the next hour. The traders knew we were heading for $ 13.75/shr and started selling just before the target, thus stopping it. We then backed up, held for a bit and rallied slightly, this formed a very short-term top where we now have a true H&S pattern. So TA would tell us that we have to retest the "even/unchanged level of the day which, low and behold, we did. Now the selling pressure is gone, the trend is slightly positive and we must head for that 5-dma again and finish what we started. A TA person sees this instantly in most cases and trades the stock accordingly. The fact that the market is down and we are up shows you that the stock is slightly positive today.

And so TA is very important to help us understand what real money is thinking while we wait for news. News always trumps TA but within that context, like NOK yesterday, where the stock stopped trading down right at the 200-dma, we see how TA even controls the news.

The problem with BlackBerry has been too much "questionable news" distorting the trade. I for one was caught off guard when we came back from our trip and found out the Heins has put his foot down on future questionable/crap news, this took the "bad trading" out of the stock and left us with light volume and confusion. Now we are starting to trade with the full power of TA while we wait for news. So now we can predict when and where the stock will trade here and it just takes so time to get use to that idea again. The big companies like Apple are really easy to trade, it is the ones like BBRY that are more difficult when 30 million shares can make or break your theory. The chart for BBRY is confusing right now but it is clear that we are now in control of the chart pattern again. We will still see the influence of options expiry on the trade but that isn't anything like a Hedge Fund creaming your investment! I see us moving up here as that $ 13.75/shr mark needs to be hit today.

I would say that trading AAPL is about 90% accurate using TA, BBRY has been 65% with bonus/crap news and more like 90% without it. I hope that things stay this way.

I have a strong academic back ground, and I'm a former specialist in trading investments for a major firm, I use fundamentals to get into a trade but I spend my time giving TA on this thread simply because I get plenty of requests in messages to this site. Thanks a lot for that. I am with you that I enter with fundamental and it looks like TA is a good indication of short term trends, which is more then likely why I pay not too much attention to it in terms of my personal investments as all of mine are 5+ years before I plan on leaving.

As a buy and hold kind of guy I think i'm safe not knowing my technicals too much but good information if I ever want to do some short term investing hah.

Re: Canadian Tire.

I'm glad they mentioned their subsidiaries in the PR (FGL). Not many people know how big FGL actually is or how many stores and Franchise banners they own, I do as I'm directly involved with FGL for work. This year alone Sportchek will be adding an additional 50 stores, and more coming next year. And with the move from Sportmart to Atmosphere in the smaller markets, FGL is growing and contributing to CanTires revenues very positively, theres other retail acquisitions that are mentioned. FGL based in Calgary Alberta has a hundred or so employees at ther corporate office, and many more construction teams (while not a large number of employees for FGL, when all the subsidiaries are included, that number grows considerably).
In my eyes this move is huge. Getting a retail company like CanTire which is adding subsidiaries year over year, gives BlackBerry a huge advantage into the retail sector and huge potential for M2M possibilities(Software/Hardware related to Point of Sale, Inventory Control, Automotive tools, sports analysis etc). If anyone wants a idea of where Sportchek is headed check out the video

Notice all the plasma TV's and the Real Time Gait Analysis and Build Your Own Shoe Wall. Alot of the electronics are Samsung from the Plasmas, to the digital tiles to the Galaxy Tabs for product information, keep in mind the plans for this were drawn in Winter 2011 and BlackBerry didn't have the software, but I could easily see CanTire/FGL incorporating BlackBerry into future store designs, and that excites me as I get to be directly involved

Thank you. The problem is that I'm not currently employing TA in BBRY--I own long-dated calls and I am satisfied in holding my position either through expiration or until my target gain is met.

As you know, the struggle with TA is to first determine what time-scale you want to analyze. BBRY can look like it's in a free-fall if you zoom in to the first 30 minutes of trading today but then it looks like it's in an uptrend if you look at the 1-year view. People new to TA must realize that everything depends on the time scale and that several time scales (or "zoom levels") should be carefully considered before taking a position.

I am in this BBRY trade for the long term because I believe it is a comeback story with tremendous upside potential, so, in general, the day-to-day behavior doesn't concern me as it would if I were trying to day-trade or short-term trade the stock. As far as the long-term (multi-year) chart goes, I see a pennant and expect to see a break to the upside that will continue the trend that started back in September, 2012. Exactly when that will happen is unclear but when it does it could be significant considering the number of shorts--in other words, it could get squeezed upward. I think many people in this thread expect the same. I don't want to try to call the week or day when I think such a breakout will occur, however, because there are too many factors the could keep the stock price range-bound for some time.

All this time (since when share was $7ish), I have resisted the urge to play on dips (buy low, sell high, repeat) because I was afraid I'd miss a short squeeze. Options have gained and lost over 300% during these swings. When stock is $14ish, premium is $x, when stock is $17ish, premium is usually $3x

This has happened like 5-6 times already and every-time I chickened out.

Finally, this time, I decided I'd start playing the swings with half of my positions. But now the price ain't going up! And we are almost into May. And I think it'd be risky to play swings (buy low, sell high) now because we might see a short-squeeze in next upswing now.

Q10 is coming out. BlackBerry's annual general meeting is in June so people who lent their stock to 'shorts' are going to ask for their shares. And that might result in short squeeze. If I played swings now, I might find myself 'out' while market experiences a short squeeze.

So, I guess, in the end: I missed so many opportunities. Chickened out when there was no imminent risk of short squeeze. And now it's too late to play swings.

In my defense though, this is the first time EVER I've purchased stocks and options; so I am very new to this and learning on the go (thanks to lot of informative posts in this thread)!
