    INDIA

    From:
Will the new BlackBerry click in the Indian smartphone market? - Livemint
    this:

India: $4B market for $500+ phones. That's a market of 8,000,0000 phones. (0.6% of population)
China: $40B market for $500+ phones. That's a market of 80,000,0000 phones. (6% of population)
USA: $60B market for $500+ phones. That's a market of 120,000,0000 phones. (33% of US population)

Seems like India is not that important. Not saying that getting 10% of India is not important. But the USA is way more important. 1% of the USA marketbase will trump 10% of India marketbase.
If BB could hook up with Lenovo on even a marketing deal .. they would do well at Lenovo's 7000 stores in China. I think that BB has problems with the security issues in China the same as India. Too much security for the governments liking using BB7.

Yes. Lots of Z0/Q10 can be sold in India and China. But z5 and q5 (just giving fictious names to low-mid-range devices, for the sake of this post) WILL sell EVEN MORE! Bold sells well in India but Curve sells even more.
Keep in mind that low-mid end devices will have lower margins than the high end. Therefore, you will need to outsell high end devices 2:1 or even 3:1.

there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for blackberry to introduce an entry-level device at this time. They did that the past 3 years and it caused constantly lower ownership. BB10 is a BIG thing, and the hype add value, and the cost creates hype

I could swear that BBRY long ago said that the first BB10 phone will eventually be the entry level phone. This will occur as OS 7 is phased out. 3 years from now, the hardware specs of the first gen Z10/Q10 will be "low end"

The BlackBerry 7 (BB7) operating system isnt likely to disappear any time soon, and neither is the flat-rated and unlimited Internet and e-mail proposition, the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS), that has made BB7-powered devices so popular in emerging markets.

In fact, BlackBerry may even offer a new BB7 device in future, according to CEO Thorsten Heins.

Although the Canadian company is focused mainly on its new BlackBerry 10 (BB10) operating system, Heins hints that it may release a new handset running BB7 because of the platforms popularity in markets like South Africa.

Many people in India, Indonesia and South Africa have their first experience of the Internet on a mobile device, Heins says. He says this means consumers in these markets may be more readily able to imagine the possibilities mobile connectivity can offer them.

With this in mind, Heins says BlackBerry is developing a portfolio of BB10 devices, which will include a mid-tier device and may even include entry-level devices in some markets.

However, he warns that low-cost BB10 devices wont appear overnight. The cost of the technology in those devices is high at the moment.

Nevertheless, as the cost of processors, touch displays and other components falls, Heins says BlackBerry has plans in place to create cheaper BB10 devices and serve emerging markets and their needs.

Part of BlackBerrys success in emerging markets has been on account of the combination of the BIS proposition, the network efficiency afforded by BlackBerrys compression of data, and the fact that most emerging markets are limited to 2G and 3G networks. Unless they move to 4G, that recipe will remain intact, Heins says. [BlackBerry] might even do new product, well see, because its a great mobile experience. (c) 2013 NewsCentral Media

This is the part where they said licensing or a partnership would be helpful. An example would be Sony who are excellent in hardware development. Most low end phones now a days have touch screen which is a key function of BB10. Unfortunately, RIMM does not have the technology nor economies of scale to produce a low tier touch screen device. This is where Sony comes in play with their ability to mass produce low-tier touch devices cost effectively. However, Im not sure what the difference is between mid tier and lower tier. What differentiates lower tier and mid tier?

Which begs the question... why doesn't he do an interview with the English speaking (ie. North American) media? If he's "allowed" to do this in German, why not in English where it will have immediate impact?

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but here's a Q10 being advertized on e-Bay with a shipment date mid March to end of March. Read the description for date details. Take it for what it's worth, but if this did have some truth to it we could be getting some good news soon.

Useless, the Z10 is not even available in the US. Heins is also doing it in Germany because the Z10 was just released there. When it is released in US, he will definitely be doing a lot more interviews in the US. Until then, the US gets no love because the US carriers do not love.

If the rumours that BBRY can't keep up with the Z10 demand are true, than it's a good thing. However, it also points to the fact that BBRY needs some sort of OEM partnership. They need a partner that can pump out a lot of devices in production to keep up with the demand. Let's hope the sell numbers are strong so we can kick the bears out of this stock!

Research the company that is making the Z10 for them. If anyone can pump out more phones, it is them.

Also, BBRY's manufacturer would have the same problems any OEM would have.
    1) You need the facilities to actually do final assembly. If there are 5 assembly lines and you need 10, it is the same problem for anyone making them.
    2) You need raw materials. If you need 10 processors instead of 5, your processor maker needs to be able to provide supply.

and, i'd like to see him address that rumor of only selling 300,000 units, by saying the following:

"I've read reports that we've only sold 300,000 Z10s. that is so laughable, as we sold that many phones in our first week in the UK alone."

that would really squash that crap.

It's not a good thing if they thought demand was going to be low and they set the bar low. (Deja vu of Nokia's WP8 sellout?)
Of course if they demand is legitimately earth shattering, it's good news.

It is a business. They set the bar appropriately and probably had internal plans for under or over estimating demand.

As a business though, you do not want to expect X units and manufacturer 2*X out of hope. You want a contingency plan if you need 2*X. They seem to have had a contingency plan. And there is a built in lag due to logistical reasons (ie: need to source components). So you are now hearing that manufacturing is ramped up.

If you make to many units:
    1) You have cash that was burned to make Z10s that would otherwise be making a few percent on low yield investments like JNJ bonds.
    2) You make all that stock. It has to be warehoused. Warehouses are not free.

This is why Just In Time manufacturing is so big these days. You want to keep cash on the books as long as possible so it can collect a yield and you do not want to have to spend additionally to house stock that you don't really need to house.

Increasing production capacity still doesn't tell us much. I'm assuming they had an initial production run of 500K. This matches with analysts estimates of 300K-500K sold. Now they would be increasing the production capacity for a second wave launch including the US market. A shorter initial production run might explain why there was seemingly sell outs and not enough supply.
