    OT with weekend reading:

Samsung deepfake AI could fabricate a video clip of you from a single photo
    https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-ai...-single-photo/
Concerns have been raised about the potential uses of such technology in the wrong hands, and the ability of the public to be able to distinguish between real videos and those which have been created in order to influence public perception of a politician. Last year US lawmakers warned that such faked videos could be damaging to national security.

Am I the only one who reacted to this news with a "so-the-hell-what" attitude?

You have some ppl saying these patents are worth 750m. They come to this conclusion by taking the 4.5b paid for the 6000 nortel patents (basically the most expensive patents ever sold), determining the value is 7.5m each, and multiplying thusly. Oh ****. I guess that means BBs 40k patents are worth 30B.

Am I the only one tired of these nonsense, pie-in-the-sky, cheating yourself at solitaire speculations? You need look no further than the balance sheet to see that BBs *entire* intellectual property portafolio of ~40000 patents are only worth like $450m, half amortized away presumably meaning an average age of about 10 years.

So with the same logic you could conclude that the patents are worth only 5-10k each, and this whole deal is worth somewhere between 500k-1m. Obviously these are not average patents, but to speculate that the 0.25% they sold are somehow worth more than 3x the book value of *all* their patents is beyond ridiculous. Hell, even if you take some of the loftiest numbers tossed about that say their total value is $4b, you're still about 2 orders of magnitude off.

Finally, selling stuff doesn't even matter. If they have property worth $1m(intellectual or otherwise), and they sell it converting it to cash, are they better off? It helps with cash flow, but it's not *profitable* in and of itself. A pound of feathers or a pound of lead. Who's worth more, the guy with a million in property, or the guy with a million in cash.

This frigging stock. Down 2x the market yesterday. Dow recovers like 40% off it's low. BB recovers 10%. Recovering a bit more today. BB red. Even compare it to TSLA who's equally all over the board. They've at least had some pretty decent upswings over the last year. We've just been in a sustained gradual rot over the last 16 months with the exception of hours long flashes in the pan. Not to mention that had you invested in TSLA at the time frame of many here, ie in the 2011-2013 range, you would still be massively up several multiples. /rant

I felt rather sad at this news. These are patents related to LTE which are in the cellular communications sector in which Blackberry no longer participates. This is just another indicator of their abandonment of this market for good.

Of course it's not unusual that part of the deal is the seller retains a domestic perpetual license to the patents.

    Still kinda sad.

OT as not surprising for some of the backlash, with increased Chinese show of nationalistic pride during the tense U.S.-China trade war:

Apple iPhone sales in China could be cut by 50% thanks to Trump's trade war
    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/apple...115735359.html
Apple derived $51 billion in sales from its “Greater China” segment in the fiscal year ended September 29, 2018. The segment represents Apple’s third-biggest region, behind the Americas and Europe. Apple has hundreds of suppliers in the country churning out the latest tech gadgets from the company.
Caution on global behemoth Apple makes sense. Apple not only sources a majority of its components from China, but has made a retail store push in the country. The yawning trade war between the two mega countries could severely raise Apple’s cost of doing business and weaken store traffic and in turn, hit profits.
“The trade war has already undercut U.S. and global growth. Prolonged brinkmanship creates further damage. A major tail risk is that tariffs extend to all Chinese products at the end of June, more than doubling the trade war shock,” cautions BAML strategists.

True, but what were their real and actual damages ?

They still had jobs, they still got paid without interruption and I suspect the Ford benefits package is much better than Blackerry's. All of this will be discovered and factored in which I suspect will limit, if not exclude any awarded compensation.

I can tell you from personal experience, courts (except in California) do not take kindly to windfalls for plaintiffs.

Let me the first one to begin the pontification on the upcoming Q1 2020 results.

I'm expecting this will be a very positive report with revenues of $275M and EPS of $0.10. This will be the first full quarter for Cylance and with stock down, I'm thinking this quarter they will be more motivated to show some real earnings. I'm starting to think Chen is a professional sandbagger and he is rationing the earnings to show a slow but steady march to a more typical earnings level for a software company. However, this quarter I think he will open the throttle just a little bit more to get the stock moving upwards.

He needs to see the stock moving up soon as his bonus compensation is centered around a $30 stock value and he needs to start getting there now or he won't make it by the expiry date.

Anyone think I have a magical gift for financial insight or have other perspectives they wish to share ?

Thank you for sharing this optimistic view. My feeling, lately, is that this stock/company has been wearing us all down, collectively. It has been hard to remain positive. Well, for me anyway!

I have the impression that whatever happens in the short term, the market will continue to drive a hard bargain with this stock until John Chen manages to show some consistent revenue growth and momentum. Until he does, and rekindles some sort of fire under BB, I see more of the same going forward. You can only keep on moving the goalposts back for so long...

All I hear is creaky doors in this here BlackBerry Saloon, and all I see is tumbleweeds bashfully rolling by.

Well, going off past experiences, whenever the BlackBerry stays silent for long periods, we all of a sudden get a positive surprise, so perhaps this time will remain constant(?)

As we are waiting to ride the next ray of sunshine, perhaps we can ponder a few Deep Thoughts:

    • If you go to a costume party at your boss's house, wouldn't you think a good costume would be to dress up like the boss's wife? Trust me, it's not.

    • Sometimes life seems like a dream, especially when I look down and see that I forgot to put on my pants.

    • If you go to a party, and you want to be the popular one at the party, do this: Wait until no one is looking, then kick a burning log out of the fireplace onto the carpet. Then jump on top of it with your body and yell, "Log o' fire! Log o' fire!" I've never done this, but I think it'd work.

    • I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

    Anyway, onward we go!

But what is the point of staying silent for long period and allowing value to disappear... only to pop it back up briefly with a little good news, and then go silent again?

    Great for trading...
