Very interesting to see that Marty Beard, former COO of BB, has founded an edge device IOT AI company. reading his tweets has left me wondering if it has any funding from BB, or to go all tin foil hat, if it is a stealth move by JC to start a AI company that can operate without the "brand burden" of BB. if successful, it will be brought into the fold later on.

to have the COO and CFO be the same person seems a bit strange, so Marty might not be as removed from things as his resignation may indicate. (please note that this is pure speculation on my part)

I thought he couldn't work due to serious health issues within his family? Or maybe such restrictions only extended to working for BB?

That said, he still has postings about BB, so he doesn't seem to be fully divested of his relationship with them, but just hard to imagine how launching an AI/IoT startup would be less time intensive then COO.

I'll gladly wear a tin foil hat if it brings some additional velocity to BB business activities.

It's been mighty quiet at BB for the last few months and if you have no other indications, you always assume the worst. Earnings next week will tell at least some of the story.

Punkt has announced the first secured-by-BlackBerry manufactured device that isn't a BB branded phone. Definitively a phone for those who value battery life, retro styling and want a break from apps.

It probably won't provide much to either top or bottom line, but hopefully it will be the first of many such customers that look to BB to secure their manufacturing process.

There should be a blurb along the bottom bezel that reads "You got Punkt by BlackBerry".

Wasn't Mike Lazaridis working on both Quantum Computers and AI?

This point in time, most every tech company has an AI Team... BlackBerry has a few job posting for those experienced with AI integration and development.

Tin Foil Hats.... Skynet or the Matrix will be online soon.

Speaks of the likely lack of any actual development going on at the company, Chen is nothing but a vapourware salesman. Market has spoken, they aren't hiring aggressively, not showing revenues, partners but no real products nothing but betas trialing a market then abandoning the product. Most of the divisions seem to be outsourced, which further erodes confidence and demonstrates products likely aren't in demand. Lots of components have been stripped from the company, given away, writedowns, and so many signs of collusion and manipulation that many questions should be asked. Instead, Chen continues to take away any free PR from being a public company and treats the company as if it's his own private company, his and Watsa's of course.

Lack of asking these questions and merely pumping John Chen when he's given no reason to trust him, bodes poorly for the company.

Most invested in the stock to gain on momentum from undervalued stock, instead seems like mediocrity is acceptable by Chen, whereby he uses the low of the stock as his reference point for performance, while setting targets that would compensate him HUGE for where SP could already have been. Chen is no saviour, he's a cheap guy who is doing charity work for Watsa as they both continue extracting value from the company rather than growing the company.

Sounds like a job for a CEO, one who actually participates in a company, not someone who makes it his hobby to take shareholder value as they want/can.

Since you want specifics, that I'd rather not have posted here you go - Terminate Chen, dump Watsa CD, replace entire BOD, bring in true visionary CEO, young talent not retired washouts. The tech industry has moved steadfast, BlackBerry still hiring by posting lawn signs in front of their office. Way to attract talent, it's a joke in case you didn't get it.

Specifics, just like the BOD and institutional shareholders are demanding from Chen. There are other institutions that own large blocks of shares. Your posits are ridiculous because if they were accurate, the regulators would have been involved long ago. The other institutional shareholders would be filing lawsuits and so on and so forth.

Really, with actual specifics and strategies, I’d love to hear what and how you think, your ideas would be accomplished. Like hiring a visionary CEO? Who do you have in mind that is available that would actually be interested and that would take offer that Chen accepted originally and now?

Seriously, I applaud you for trying but you will never get that kind of information from this group. Let's enjoy John Chen next week and let him do the talking. Great posts.

Also, there's a forum for Armchair CEO discussions. Most of the griping about Chen and what you'd like to see probably belongs there.

If you're a retail investor, griping about Chen is like griping about gravity. There is nothing you can do to change it. Better to focus on something you can change. Like your investment mix.
