Facebook, Big Data and You
What Cambridge Analytica and Facebook tell us about how our data is used. Manuela Saragosa speaks to Tijmen Schep, a Dutch technology critic and author of a book called Design My Privacy, about the realities of the data economy, and to Paul-Olivier Dehaye, co-founder of a Swiss start-up called PersonalData.IO, which helps people reclaim their data from companies like Tinder. And US tech journalist Ben Tarnoff discusses the prospect of tighter regulation on the way tech firms like Facebook use the information they have on their users.

"The Skinomi accessories provided us not only evidence that the BlackBerry KEYone 2 exists, but also a possible release date. On both sites, the availability of the items isn't until June 15, 2018, indicating the likely release date of the new device. Therefore, it's likely that TCL and BlackBerry will announce the new device by late May or early June."03-20-18 07:28 AMLike 7 - Hi Morgan. Fantastic to see a post from you again. a post-close rally in BB makes perfect sense given that you are back.
Are you suggesting that they pay up for a licensing deal (buy their silence) or buy BB altogether? this is just for clarity, as I would be beyond amazed if Fb bought BB. that said, the royalty advertising stream is facing strong headwinds from European law makers, who seems to not stand for the royalty play any more and are looking at taxing revenue at 3%.
I also think that Microsoft looks like it could be better off owning BlackBerry as well. At $ 13.00/shr, it is a typical acquisition now with only a 50% premium needed to make it happen. Facebook is involved in a PR nightmare that it might not get out of for years and at a much lower stock price to come. And so I'm looking at California, a litigious State, one that protects intellectual rights, the bedrock of tech and a lawsuit from the king of mobile patent companies in BlackBerry and I'm thinking they need to settle this one fast or make it go away.
Again, just my opinion here.03-20-18 09:39 AMLike 10 -
They have lost in market cap alone, enough to pay $ 20.00/shr for BB which we all can probably agree ... everyone would submit to today. BlackBerry can be acquired for less than $ 10 B net of cash or $ 20.00/shr. Now Chen wants to partner up and FB could see a charge against them to the amount of $ 2B plus little chance of them negotiating a favourable deal on their part for royalties or licenses after the charge. The two companies start to look good together when you add up the risks.

BlackBerry vs. Facebook: Why David Will Beat Goliath
Rob Enderle03-20-18 02:57 PMLike 3 - General information regarding need to remain careful out there:
The Dark Web: How much is your bank account worth? | ZDNet
"According to the researchers, the Dark Web is "awash" with stolen information. Major brands including MasterCard, Visa, and American Express are common, and stolen data belonging to individuals surfaces from a variety of countries.
Credit card data is generally sold as two packages -- one which provides only numbers, and the other -- known as "fullz" -- includes information to help verify that criminals are the card owners if they are challenged. For example, one seller offering US credit card numbers sold each one for between $10 - $12. However, another trader which sold "fullz" packages raised the price to $18. The credit limit on cards also impacts the cost in the underground. Those with an advertised $5,000 limit are being sold for $450, while a card with a $10,000 limit was spotted on sale for $800. Another with a limit of $15,000 was being touted for $1,000.
While card numbers are big business, access to accounts is also hot property. PayPal, too, is a target for traders, and their sale prices also depend on their balances. Another seller was offering what they called "full profiles" of stolen identities. For the bargain price of $40, the seller would allegedly provide social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth, and less sensitive information such as education and telephone numbers. The same trader also offered to provide background checks.
"All of this sensitive and personal data is potentially damaging on its own, but it can quickly escalate to devastating when combined with fake receipts, IDs, and government documents," the team notes.03-20-18 07:30 PMLike 4 - very interesting Medium post by James Allworth about what the current FB

The Bridge solution lives up to its name – it sits in the middle and bridges the gap between Microsoft’s apps and BlackBerry Dynamics so that they work together while still maintaining their separate identities.
“Customers have been asking to have Microsoft apps inside BlackBerry’s container platform for a long time – in fact, a few global financial organizations wrote a letter to [BlackBerry CEO] John Chen almost two years ago asking for this integration, so John met up with [Microsoft CEO] Satya Nadella to discuss, and that’s how Bridge was created,” explains Carl Wiese, president of global sales at BlackBerry.
Bridge is available for both Android and iOS mobile devices, and is completely integrated with Microsoft Azure cloud platform.03-21-18 12:24 PMLike 8 - https://www.cantechletter.com/2018/0...investor-says/

Nokia Subsidiaries Trimmed From BlackBerry Patent Suit
Law360 (March 20, 2018, 8:55 PM EDT) -- A Delaware federal judge on Monday trimmed BlackBerry Ltd.’s suit against Nokia over the infringement of 11 patents describing proprietary technology underlying 3G and 4G mobile communication, agreeing with Nokia that some of its subsidiaries should be dismissed because BlackBerry didn’t allege an agency relationship between them.
The suit launched in February 2017 said Finnish companies Nokia Corp. and Nokia Solutions and Networks OY, as well as American companies Nokia Solutions and Networks Holdings USA Inc. and Nokia Solutions and Networks US LLC, were “willfully blind”...rarsen and morganplus8 like this.03-21-18 07:59 PMLike 2 - BlackBerry reaches deal to supply Jaguar with automotive technology

BlackBerry Ltd. and Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. have struck a deal to work together on technology for new vehicles.
For BlackBerry, it is a strategic win, as the Waterloo, Ont.-based company stakes more of its future on the auto industry, with an eye on self-driving cars. In January, it made its first appearance at North America's largest auto show, in Detroit.
BlackBerry already sells technology to car makers around the world. The Jaguar deal will allow the two companies to work more closely together, similar to BlackBerry's partnership with Ford.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT
BlackBerry, the inventor of the smartphone and once Canada's star tech firm, remains a shadow of its former self, but its stock has risen about 80 per cent in the past year as chief executive officer John Chen's turnaround remains on track. Mr. Chen recently signed a five-year contract extension that could be worth more than US$300-million. He has shifted BlackBerry's focus away from hardware – the phone market in which it soared, then crashed – to software, such as the Jaguar supply agreement.
"For BlackBerry, [Jaguar] is a very important deal," John Wall, a BlackBerry senior vice-president, said in an interview Wednesday. "This aligns completely with John Chen's vision."
The two companies said they have made a multiyear deal but did not release financial details. BlackBerry will license its QNX software and Certicom security technology to Jaguar, and a team of BlackBerry engineers will work on the project.
"Working with BlackBerry will enable us to develop the safe and secure next generation connected car our customers want," said Dave Nesbitt, a vehicle engineering director at Jaguar Land Rover, in a statement.
BlackBerry said its expertise in secure software for the car industry helps protect technology in vehicles from cyberattacks. It said this is a "pivotal moment" for auto makers, who are trying to figure out the "software architecture" of vehicles that are becoming ever more reliant on technology to guide driving.
The partnership is BlackBerry's second deal this week. On Tuesday, it said it would work with former rival Microsoft Corp., connecting its mobile security technology with mobile apps from Microsoft. BlackBerry stock rose 3 per cent that day after the news.
The Jaguar deal was officially announced early on Thursday morning.03-21-18 11:31 PMLike 11 - Additional info on the Jaguar BlackBerry news:
As part of the agreement, BlackBerry will license its QNX and Certicom technology to Jaguar Land Rover, as well as assign a team of engineers to support in the development of new Electronic Control Unit (ECU) modules. The first ECU project will be a next-generation infotainment system.03-22-18 04:48 AMLike 5 -
- As with Ford, this new deal places BlackBerry in a Tier 1 relationship with Jaguar Land Rover:
In industries such as automotive, tier one companies take responsibility for functions originally carried out by OEMs. According to “Quality Digest,” tier one automotive suppliers take responsibility for design concept and manufacturing of modules such as interior lighting systems, fuel delivery and braking systems. OEMs focus on overall design and production of engine and drive train, leaving other component and accessory development to tier one companies.03-22-18 06:40 AMLike 3 - Through the various noises coming from George K., what I retain is:
• This puts BlackBerry on the security map, and I expect many more such BlackBerry-Microsoft agreements in the future.
• I also see BlackBerry as becoming a leader in IoT security when 5G takes off.
• Interestingly enough, this partnership comes at a time when hackers are on a rampage, and have been able to blackmail enterprise customers to get their information back, in exchange for Bitcoin. Guess is MSFT sees this as a risk and wants to protect its enterprise customer base as much as possible from such attacks (and blackmail).
• This puts BB in the spotlight as far as security is concerned. If it's good enough for MSFT, it's probably good enough for a whole host of other companies and industries. I expect we will see many more such partnerships in the future.

Blackberry CEO Chen on Big Tech, Innovation and Jaguar
Bloomberg Markets
March 22nd, 2018, 10:31 AM EDT
John Chen, chief executive officer at BlackBerry, discusses big tech, innovation and Blackberry's partnerships. He speaks with Bloomberg's Jonathan Ferro on "Bloomberg Markets: The Open." (Source: Bloomberg)03-22-18 09:32 AMLike 7 - Article written by some involved in preparing technical standards:
How safe is your car from hackers?
https://iecetech.org/Technology-Focu...d4ae-142424361
IHS Markit predicts that more than 70 million connected cars will be on the road by 2023. Official UK data suggests that vehicle theft has risen by around 30% as criminals use new technology to break into cars. For example, “relay car hackers” use radio transmitters to intercept the signal from a car key, often succeeding in gaining access to a vehicle in less than a minute. Car theft is far from the only threat, however. A recent report warns that terrorists could hack into connected and autonomous vehicles in order to crash them deliberately. “Unless appropriate cyber security measures are implemented, hackers can remotely access the vehicle's computer system, manipulate the brakes, engine and transmission.”
One of the most quoted statistics about connected cars is that, collectively, all the built-in software systems contain more than 100 million lines of code. That is twice as many lines of code as CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, and seven times more than the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. “You can’t secure every line of code,” says Chuck Brokish of Green Hills Software, “but you can identify critical components.” The experts say that connected cars should be fitted with security systems and mechanisms that provide the most stringent protection and rigorous security countermeasures. They are not.
Alex Manea, the Chief Security Officer of BlackBerry, urges manufacturers to authenticate every chip and electronic control unit and ensure they are loaded only with trusted software. Regular health checks via analytics and diagnostics software are essential, but he argues that the critical factor currently lacking in the industry is a security-conscious corporate culture. “Ensure that every organization involved in supplying auto electronics is trained in safety and security with best practices to inculcate this culture within the organization”, says Manea.03-22-18 11:44 AMLike 6
