When they put out a price target at or lower than the stock is trading with all the positive things going for BBRY now, they appear to be trying to persuade small investors not to buy while larger funds are accumulating.

    8. BLACKBERRY KEYONE
    BlackBerry KEYone (Image: TCL)
The BlackBerry DTEK60 is a solid device, available at a great price, that offers a high level of security in an elegant design. However, I decided to award the spot on this list to the upcoming BlackBerry KEYone that brings a physical QWERTY back to BlackBerry customers.

The BlackBerry KEYone doesn't have all of the highest flagship specs found in the DTEK60, but it is a very capable device with an excellent camera. The KEYone has a 4.5 inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, massive 3505 mAh battery, 12 megapixel rear camera, and fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard spacebar.

TCL is now making BlackBerry hardware and as I saw on the DTEK60 it is doing a fantastic job at providing monthly Android security updates, which is not something many Android manufacturers can say.

The BlackBerry KEYone was scheduled for an April release but with the latest news it may be delayed until May. It is priced at $549, which is reasonable for this unique BlackBerry device.""

Blackberry calls in Hilco to move portfolio including former Nortel assets; China may be ultimate destination - Blog - Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) - Maximising IP Value for Business

Blackberry appears to have made a second significant patent disposal in the course of its turnaround strategy, in a deal facilitated by the relatively new IP transactions team at Hilco Global. The transaction history of the shell company that acquired the portfolio points toward a Chinese smartphone company as the possible buyer.

USPTO records show 24 separate assignments of a single patent right between an entity called “Hilco Patent Acquisition 55, LLC” and Golden Valley Holdings Limited. The assignments were all executed on 25th January, and were recorded between 23rd February and 8th March. A document attached to the latest assignment appears to lay out the full schedule of US and foreign rights being transacted – 177 assets in all, among them 31 US patent grants and applications.

Golden Valley, headquartered in Samoa, has acquired patents from multiple sources since 2015; all of those it has passed along so far have gone to Oppo. In 2016, it assigned the Chinese smartphone maker US patents acquired from Inventergy (in a $4 million deal this blog reported on), Intellectual Ventures and Intellectual Discovery. It also received three separate assignments from SK Telecom last year. There’s no indication that these patents, or the Hilco ones, have been transferred to Oppo.

The relationship between Golden Valley and Oppo is unclear, but given the public assignment history between the two, it would not be a surprise to see the Hilco portfolio wind up in Oppo’s possession. Both Hilco and Oppo declined to comment.

All of the patents involved were formerly owned by Blackberry, which assigned more than 200 patents and applications (including non-US assets) to the Hilco vehicle last May. Of the 18 US patent grants ultimately assigned to Golden Valley, four were originally assigned to Nortel and were part of the Rockstar auction. Presumably these were among the families Blackberry chose to retain before the Rockstar portfolio was sold to RPX, meaning they could be among the more valuable assets from that portfolio.

The package appears to have significant coverage across various European jurisdictions, as well as a handful of counterparts in China and in India, where Oppo is currently defending infringement litigation filed by Dolby.

Last May, Blackberry CEO John Chen said monetising the company’s 40,000 plus patents is a key part of the company’s strategy to revive its fortunes, adding: “Many people have wanted to buy the patents… But I’m not really in a patent-selling mode, I’m in a patent licensing mode”. Back in November, Blackberry sold a portfolio to Centerbridge Partners that is now being monetised through litigation, and it’s unknown whether the Canadian company has a stake in the outcome. But though the company is focused on licensing and litigation, it seems willing to entertain buy offers as well, if the price is right.

The deal appears to be the first public patent transaction made by Hilco Global since its January 2016 hire of former Ocean Tomo executive Michael Friedman. Friedman worked on the aforementioned Centrebridge sale for Blackberry while he was with Ocean Tomo, and it looks like he is still the Canadian company’s go-to when it comes to disposals.

Hilco, which specialises in distressed investments, signaled its intent to be a bigger player in the patent market last November when it brought John Veschi and his former Rockstar team on board and announced the launch of Hilco IP Merchant Banking. This deal was in motion several months before the new bank was announced, but given Veschi’s past at Nortel and Rockstar, perhaps his expertise was called on as well.

Oppo shot to the top of China’s smartphone leaderboard in 2016, selling 78 million devices to elbow past Huawei, Apple and its sister company Vivo (both Oppo and Vivo were founded by Duan Yongping and are subsidiaries of BBK Electronics). It’s also thriving commercially in India and throughout Southeast Asia. In 2015, it filed more Chinese invention patents (3,338) than both Huawei and Xiaomi, and it grew that figure by 13% last year to make it 2016’s fifth biggest Chinese patent applicant.

Oppo’s IP team keeps a low profile, but the deals made through Golden Valley Holdings in the past year show that it’s increasingly turning to third-party acquisitions. The transaction record suggests a patent buyer picking its spots, targeting smaller-sized portfolios that could have strategic value. If Oppo is indeed the buyer in this case, it looks like its biggest foray yet into the patent transactions market.

The market is a mix of various characters, some like to trade for the short-term, others, like Funds, are in it for the long term, 5-years or more. A short-term trader is following the 3 to 5-minute chart patterns looking for reversals. We have highly competent traders on this board who chart the 2 - 5 minute trading patterns in BlackBerry for this very reason. Both groups can influence the price of the stock in both directions, they have large amounts of capital and analysts and TA specialists to guide them. I often say that the market trades far to long, that we could shorten the day to under 1 hour and get the same result. It is because it trades for 6 1/2 hours that the market needs some time to back and fill movements and to start new trends. Shorts will try to stop a rally by selling stock they don't hold, by purchasing Call Options to protect their positions and by effecting trading when light volume occurs. I would think that shorts stopped Friday's rally, so did some profit-taking from non-believers, cash traders etc.. As well, TA specialists sold the stock when it met their targets. And so in the short run, you have a great deal of money moving in and out of a play. If I was a large Fund, I wouldn't hurry to buy the stock on Friday, I would sit before a board and discuss the investment first and come back this week to start my purchases. Rarely do Funds buy the news that day.

But in the long run, you also have a group of investors who take their cue based upon how the story is developing. One of the three examples you gave, ECA saw its underlying commodity base out and start to rally again. The commodity moved up, the thought that OPEC might cut back on production put a floor under the sector as a whole and we all know from analyst accounts that ECA is great at managing costs and therefore they are highly leveraged when their core products start to raise in value. Large Funds buy and hold, they set bench marks too, when ECA reports earnings they expect that through leverage ECA will post superior earnings, and if that result occurs, it sets the stage to at least hold onto ECA or add more. Of the 10,000 stocks to buy, only 1% or 100 of them are really moving in a predictable way. The rest tend to trade sideways while the company pulls together an investment "story" of their own. We have watched BlackBerry develop that story for 3-years now, and this quarter, it is paying off. The stock is seeing long term money move into it as Funds buy stock at least 2 quarters in advance of what they are forecasting for the investment itself. BlackBerry is now within that small group of companies with a story that investors want to believe in. Chen did a remarkable job of telling a story that includes several balls in the air with one or more of them about to go viral. The three stocks that you mentioned, began with a story, they delivered on that story with positive results each quarter and the story remained intact. And now we see that energy has topped out, ECA has topped out and the volume of sellers and buyers has shifted to neutral. They are slowly rotating out of the investment in ECA today.

Large investors are buying BBRY today, the volume is amazing, TA investors are trading BBRY today, they are moving in again because the stock is turning positive in the short-term. For all of these reasons, the stock is going higher. The shorts have to cover, they have no choice as there is a story behind BBRY now and it is a risk to be short the stock. Chen just has to announce another "Ford" or another "Radar" contract or partnership and the stock will rally hard from here. The Funds need to get into it TODAY if they are right about the higher valuation 6 months from now. In conclusion, you will see these stocks rally, pause to refresh, confirm the story set out by the CEO and rally higher until the formula is cracked in some way. Friday was a big day for BBRY and John Chen and now long is the direction to be in; until he slips up. It is difficult to stop a stock from dropping when the world hates it and the same is true for a story that people love to hear more about, and BlackBerry, not unlike your other three ideas has a story now and investors are beginning to really buy into it.

I rarely ever post a 5-minute chart but I did it this time in protest to the thinking that BBRY is a poor trade at a time when it is really doing something special now. That downward channel has been broken and that should signal the end to the downside for this one. If the general market can hold its 50-dma, BBRY will do very well.
Thank you so much for your insight and dumbing things down for people like me to learn.

It makes absolute sense to team up with key partner in India: BlackBerry - The Economic Times

Thurber said Optiemus’ design and go-to-market plans combined with Black-Berry’s secure and productive software will be a great fit for customers in India.

"This fits in our overarching principle, in the new business model, which can be summed up as “global consistency with local flavour." We believe we will achieve greater localization and scale in India with our partnership," he added.

The executive said the three existing handset-based licensees are only the first phase of BlackBerry’s licensing strategy, and the company is implementing phase 2 of its strategy, though he declined to share details.

As part of its revival strategy under which it is rebuilding its business with main focus on enterprise sales, BlackBerry roped in HCL Infosystems as national distributor of its enterprise products and solutions, aimed at increasing total addressable market for its software and solutions.

More speculation with VW being the European car deal...

I'm not sure if people remember, awhile ago Blackberry sold their R&D department in Germany to VW Infotainment. This involves the shift of 200 engineers to VW. Sounds similar to a recent deal with Ford.

"Research and development centres are typically shrouded in secrecy for competitive reasons, and BlackBerry declined to outline what products it fostered there.

In a statement, BlackBerry said the Bochum centre oversaw hardware, software and mechanical development, as well as certain testing, certification and quality management responsibilities. "

BlackBerry Opts In for Privacy | Inside BlackBerry
    John Chen

At BlackBerry, we make it our business not to know your business. This mindset has led us to be one of the most trusted mobile security software providers in the world. We believe privacy is paramount. It’s because of this I felt the need to address recent news surrounding the FCC’s Internet privacy rule which would have banned Internet providers from collecting, storing, sharing, and selling certain types of customer information without those customers’ consent.

Even though the legislation was signed on Monday night, I want to reassure employees and customers that BlackBerry will continue to provide the highest standard of security, which includes an opt-in approach as it provides the most protection. Our privacy policy will not change. We do not look to monetize our customer’s information and imperil their privacy.

While it is great the U.S. government is taking steps to ease regulatory burdens on business, encroaching on privacy is something everyone in the tech industry should stand up against. By working together to protect our customers’ private information we can send a clear message that Americans’ privacy is not for sale.
