A (nearly) worldwide license sold to TCL and no reaction at all in the stock?

    Posted via CB10
They are currently in the "quiet period" there are no numbers mentioned, and, they sold few phones themselves so if you try to extrapolate something from their own numbers, the gain to the bottom line isn't that great for phones alone. Now the deal for BBM is a different story, if there was a "content" feature with this contract, then you would see some hot guesses taking place. I would like to see them do two more BBM deals for China and India.

As for the stock, we see more volume and slightly negative trade as it is during major news events that enough players show up to get out of this investment or speculate on it for the balance of the year. We traded purely on TA, moved to the top of the Bollinger Bands, pushed through the over-bought bands several times before giving up and heading right back to neutral at $ 7.62/shr. This is normal trading for any stock and we do have major news in one more trading session. GL

Let's face it, what kind of game-changer has APPL released lately? What has been a must-have product? Not much. Interestingly enough, over the last five years, the only new product has been the Apple Watch. And unfortunately, there hasn't been much buzz about it. If anything, APPL has not given much of a reason to shell out over $350 for the device. Apple does not disclose its Watch numbers. Instead, they are part of the "other products" category, which saw a drop of 22% in the September quarter .

It seems almost inevitable that Donald Trump will lower the taxes on foreign capital. In other words, AAPL stock should get a boost from getting access to the $215 billion in foreign accounts. Thus progress of Apple financials seems more depending on unpaid taxes in other countries, than on true technology innovation -- but you already suspected that. Of course, AAPL has the ability to coast on its massive businesses. But this will not last forever. "

Switching gears, Canada's BlackBerry to open autonomous vehicle hub
    2016-12-18 07:00:00 PM ET (Reuters)

    By Alastair Sharp

OTTAWA, Dec 18 (Reuters) - Canada's BlackBerry Ltd will open an autonomous driving research center on Monday, as it tries to make itself an indispensable under-the-hood piece of the automotive industry's weaponry in the self-driving vehicle arms race.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the launch by the Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone pioneer, the prime minister's office said on Sunday. A Blackberry spokeswoman deferred any comment on the project until Monday.

Blackberry, once known for its phones but now betting its future on the more profitable business of making software and managing mobile devices after largely ceding the smartphone market to the likes of Apple and Samsung, is expanding subsidiary QNX's Ottawa facility to focus on developing advanced driver assistance and autonomous vehicle technology.

After a detour where QNX's industrial-focused software was used to reinvent the now-discarded BlackBerry pho ne operating system, BlackBerry is focused on how its embedded software interacts with the explosion of sensors, cameras and other components required for a car to drive itself.

But while deep-pocketed Silicon Valley has invested heavily in the artificial intelligence and machine learning required for autonomy, more financially-constrained BlackBerry has not, eyeing instead a niche role as a trusty sidekick.

"What QNX is doing is providing the infrastructure that allows you to build higher-level algorithms and to also acquire data from the sensors in a reliable manner," said Sebastian Fischmeister, a University of Waterloo associate professor who has worked with QNX since 2009.

"Our play in this is that we provide the software foundation for these high-performance compute platforms," QNX head John Wall said in an interview on Friday .

BlackBerry and the university's research teams got the green light to test Ford Motor Co Lincoln vehicles with autonomous feat ures on Ontario's public roads late last month. The company has also inked a deal to work directly with the Detroit-based carmaker as it works to get fleets of robot ride-sharing vehicles to market by 2021.

Wall said the company is in advanced discussions with "more than one or two" other major global automakers about similar partnerships, but also cautioned that the hype of robot cars would take a long time to be fully realized.

QNX already powers infotainment and telematics systems in millions of cars, giving an option to automakers watching the speed at which firms such as Tesla Motors Inc, ride-hailing company Uber Technologies Inc, and Alphabet Inc's Google have advanced their self-driving projects.

"If they can prove that they have the whole package and the security, they could absolutely dominate the market" for autonomous vehicle operating systems, said Sam Fiorani, an analyst at Auto Forecast Solutions.

Risks remain, including the challenge from chip makers such as Intel Corp who, eyeing demand for their processors in future robot cars, could discount or give away their own security and safety software in order to sell more hardware.

"Some of these companies can afford to lose a lot of money in their pursuit of adoption and market share," said Chris Rommel, who leads embedded technology research at VDC Research. (Reporting by Alastair Sharp, additional reporting by Andrea Hopkins; Editing by Alan Crosby)

Ensuring*a*Bright Future for BBM in Indonesia | Inside BlackBerry
    Marty Beard

In June, we struck a partnership with Indonesia’s leading media company, Emtek, to license the rights to develop and offer cross-platform BBM.

The goal was to better serve our many BBM users, and, in particular, our 60 million monthly active users in Indonesia, by working with a trusted partner who we know can accelerate the delivery of new features and services for BBM. That goal has been more than met – see all of the new security features, mobile shopping offerings, mobile games, and more that have become available on BBM in the last several months.

However, we’ve read some inaccurate press reports that tell a different story and we want to bring the facts to light. First of all, let’s be clear. BlackBerry owns 100% of BBM. We have merely licensed the rights to the Android, iOS and Windows Phone versions of BBM to a newly formed subsidiary of Emtek named Creative Media (www.BBMTek.com). lackBerry maintains direct control over the BBOS and BlackBerry 10 versions of BBM, as well as BBM Enterprise (formerly BBM Protected).

Businesses running BBM Enterprise for the ultimate in high-security mobile communications can remain confident that there will be no changes, disruptions or degradation of their service. It is also important to note that there are NO plans to move any BBM infrastructure, including BBM servers located in Canada and the U.S., to Indonesia, contrary to what the Head of Creative Media apparently communicated to the media.

BlackBerry and Emtek are 100% aligned on their vision to advance BBM for consumers and on making sure our many Indonesian users continue to have the best experience possible. We remain extremely committed to Indonesia and our fans there. To that end, we have ensured that Indonesian consumers will have ready access to our handsets through our partnership with PT BB Merah Putih.

BlackBerry Creates Innovation Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 19, 2016) - Underscoring the company's commitment to continuous innovation, John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO of BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB), was joined by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today to unveil the BlackBerry QNX Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Centre (AVIC). Housed within the BlackBerry QNX facility in Ottawa, Ontario, the centre will accelerate the realization of connected and self-driving vehicles by developing production-ready software independently and in collaboration with partners in the private and public sector.

As part of this initiative, BlackBerry QNX plans to recruit and hire local software engineers to work on ongoing and emerging engineering projects for connected and autonomous cars. The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario recently approved BlackBerry QNX to test autonomous vehicles on Ontario roads as part of a pilot program. One of the centre's first projects will be supporting this pilot as well as BlackBerry QNX's work with the University of Waterloo, PolySync, and Renesas Electronics to build an autonomous concept vehicle.

"Autonomous vehicles require software that is extremely sophisticated and highly secure," said Chen. "Our innovation track record in mobile security and our demonstrated leadership in automotive software make us ideally suited to dominate the market for embedded intelligence in the cars of the future."

"With the opening of its innovation centre in Ottawa, BlackBerry is helping to establish our country as the global leader in software and security for connected car and autonomous vehicle development," said Trudeau. "This centre will create great middle-class jobs for Canadians, new opportunities for recent university graduates, and further position Canada as a global hub for innovation."

BlackBerry QNX has been supplying mission-critical embedded software to the automotive industry for over ten years and can be found in more than 60 million vehicles today. Millions of telematics-equipped cars on the road are using BlackBerry's Certicom security technology for communication authentication and authorization. Already a leading supplier of software for infotainment, acoustics, telematics and digital instrument clusters, BlackBerry QNX is extending its platform expertise into ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist Systems), CVAV (Connected Vehicle and Autonomous Vehicle) systems and secure Over the Air Software Update services.

Experts predict that 50 percent of all cars will connect to the cloud by 2020, and the wide range of 'connected things' could exceed 20 billion. In the coming hyper-connected world, cars will soon carry one of the highest concentrations of Internet of Things (IoT) edge nodes and sensors, generating a vast amount of valuable and actionable data. Anticipating this shift, BlackBerry is investing in key technologies and building a product portfolio that will provide the embedded intelligence that powers the core electronics of connected and autonomous cars.

Reports of their death premature, BlackBerry is an example of how to revive a dying brand

People need to stop talking about Blackberry’s phone franchise like it’s a eulogy, since the company has recovered in a massive way

Over the weekend, Blackberry announced it had licensed out its phone brand to China’s TCL to market their phones under the Blackberry moniker.

The deal has limitations, as BlackBerry is working on a similar deal in India, has another in Indonesia with BB Merah Putih, and the agreement does not apply to much of Southeast Asia.

Clues that TCL might effectively take over the BlackBerry name were evident in the release of the DTEK60, which strongly resembled the TCL Alcatel Idol 4 according to Android Police. But the announcement brought about a couple really weird but certainly clickable flow of bell-tolling headlines.

MakeUseOf went with “BlackBerry is dead in all but name,” with the site’s writer Dave Parrack penning, “So, BlackBerry the company is alive and well and managing just fine. But BlackBerry the brand is deader than a dead thing which died mourning the demise of the dodo. Or something.”

Something? I guess. Okay. Whatever. Then there was Matthew Hughes over at The Next Web with the stylistic headline “Yep. BlackBerry is Dead.”

He continued in the most eloquent way possible, “After six years of slowly circling the drain, like an un-flushable hunk of stool, the embattled company recently announced in October that it would cease to design its own handsets, instead releasing re-branded handsets from other manufacturers.”

Stool is right from one perspective, I guess. Neither of these assessments can look past phones, and whose assessments of BlackBerry coincidentally match the analogy that Hughes published.

The BBRY Café. [Formerly: I support BBRY and I buy shares!]-bbry-dec-1.png

The DTEK60 by BlackBerry had all the telltale signs of TCL phones according to Android observers

BlackBerry is the example of how to pivot a dinosaur in a changing market. The company’s phones not only live on and will make the company money through its licensing deals (a new BlackBerry model BBC100-1 was spotted in the wild within hours of the TCL announcement), but BlackBerry’s software and deep tech strategies are paying off in big ways.

Just last month, BlackBerry announced it would back a trial of self-driving cars in Waterloo, Ontario, the company’s hometown. The company’s BlackBerry QNX subsidiary will use a Lincoln (a subsidiary of Ford) for its part of the trial, working alongside the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Automotive Research and Erwin Hymer Group.

And this is just the beginning of BlackBerry’s software offensive.

    Blackberry rebuilds

This is the sexiest news BlackBerry has had outside the phone world, but they have been making deals for years designing what should be considered the best pivot by an again technological giant in the digital age.

BlackBerry’s stock has been stable since mid-2012, hovering a little above $10 a pop over most of that period. Of course, that does not begin to approach where the company was in mid-2007 ($241.90). They aren’t the only company that has been skewered in the media for their phones’ fall from grace. Finland’s Nokia has also been ceremoniously roasted.

Chest-beating their way through 2013 with the release of BlackBerry 10, Z10, and Q10. But that was after a year of delays, too long in the smartphone market increasingly dominated by Apple and the iPhone. BlackBerry’s keyboards were dying, and they knew it.

They saw the writing on the wall sometime around mid-2014, when they laid off 4,500 workers and took a $1 billion loss. Fairfax Financial Holdings almost acquired the company that fall, but in the end invested CA$1 billion and placed John Chen in the CEO’s chair to replace Thorsten Heins.

The BBRY Café. [Formerly: I support BBRY and I buy shares!]-bbry-dec-2.jpg

Former BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins, chief executive officer of BlackBerry, speaks during the company’s annual general meeting in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday, July 9, 2013.

BlackBerry’s new business model reflects another hardware giant changing with the markets: Motorola. The company split its phone brand off entirely in 2011 as Motorola Mobility, while keeping the Motorola Solutions name to focus on emergency communications management.

Motorola Solutions, whom we profiled back in January, has over a dozen investments in communications and emergency tech with their portfolio growing: BriefCam, BlueLine Grid, Rivkom, AgentVI, Cleversafe, CyPhy, SST, TRX, Eyefluence, SceneDoc, assistant.ai, and VocalZoom.

But BlackBerry has a more expansive portfolio of services, as seen in cars, cyber security, IoT, and what they call the “Enterprises of Things.”

Blackberry has not taken any shares in startups during its rebuilding phase, electing to straight out acquire companies to build branches of its new business.

The BBRY Café. [Formerly: I support BBRY and I buy shares!]-bbry-dec-3.jpg

    BlackBerry CEO John Chen

In 2014 they grabbed mobile services company Movirtu, then workplace collaboration platform WatchDox in April 2015. AtHoc came in that July, followed by a $25 million acquisition of mobile security outfit Good Technology two months later. So far in 2016 they’ve scooped up cyber security startup Encription from just outside Birmingham, England.

    The result?

BlackBerry’s revenue for software and services exploded in Q2 2016, up to $156 million, up 111 percent on Q2 2015 according to the company.

“We are reaching an inflection point with our financial picture stable and our pivot to software taking hold,” BlackBerry CEO John Chen told reporters at the end of September.

Gartner ranks BlackBerry first in several categories dealing with mobile information security, including commercial services, government services, shared devices, shared data, and connections between employee and non-employee systems.

You might be driving a BlackBerry in a few years

WatchDox is now BlackBerry Workspaces, a highly secured platform for coworkers to share and edit files. Blackberry Enterprise Identity enables single sign-on for multiple programs at once, with Blackberry 2FA streamlining and automating multilayered authentication.

They claimed nearly 700 new B2B buyers for their BlackBerry Enterprise Mobility Suite and new business for their emergency communications software AtHoc, a company they acquired in 2015 for $250 million.

And finally, the company announced BlackBerry Secure for enterprise IoT security just a week ago, a summary of parts from all their recent acquisitions Good Technology, WatchDox, AtHoc, and Encription. Their reach could become more pervasive in other verticals as well.

Back in 2014, they made a foray into medicine and invested $10 million into NantOmics toward their NantOmics Cancer Genome Browser for cancer diagnostics. They are also looking at medical cyber security, serving as a co-author to the DTSec security standard to protect insulin pumps alluding to vulnerabilities in cardiac implants and other devices where the company might step in.

“One thing we can be sure of is that soon there will be another disturbing report of vulnerable life-critical medical devices that further erodes consumer confidence,” wrote BlackBerry Chief Security Officer David Kleidermacher in September. “By using the DTSec model, we can ensure caregivers and patients will not incur undue risk from lack of awareness about which products are secure and which are not known to be secure.”

    But cars are the future.

BlackBerry recently inked a deal with Ford to continue developing new software for its Sync3 in-car infotainment system with an eye toward more autonomous technology. Ford wants a line of autonomous vehicles by 2021, so switching software partners within five years of their goal is not a likely scenario.

That agreement places BlackBerry in a very exclusive club. Uber, as much an AI company now as it is a ride-sharing company, has partnerships with Chevrolet and Volvo. US ride-sharing rival Lyft has a prominent agreement with General Motors (GM). Google works with Fiat Chrysler (FCA) to develop autonomous minivans. Apple also has its own self-driving vehicle division.

BlackBerry is going to be big when it comes to connected and autonomous vehicles. They have Blackberry Radar installed in 1,500 trucks belonging to the Caravan Transport Group and a new agreement with Karma Automotive to secure updates to connected car software.

For all the death knells tolling, there is a hefty chance you will see the BlackBerry name beyond the dashboard in the not-too-distant future. You might even be driving one.

Blackberry Picks Ottawa as Hub For Self-Driving Car Tech - WSJ

Pivot toward autonomous driving emerges after company puts a stop to directly manufacturing smartphones

OTTAWA— BlackBerry Ltd. said Monday that the Canadian capital would serve as its new hub to develop software for the operation of driverless cars, as the company pushes further into the auto industry to generate a new source of revenue.

The Waterloo, Ontario company said the center, in suburban Ottawa, would be focused on software development, and was looking to hire local engineers for projects focused on autonomous cars

The company didn’t say how many people it planned to add to its payroll as part of its autonomous-driving push, or how much the company was looking to invest.

“Our innovation track record in mobile security and our demonstrated leadership in automotive software make us ideally suited to dominate the market for embedded intelligence in the cars of the future,” BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said in a statement.

Autonomous cars rely on a complex system of software and sensors to avoid hitting other vehicles, to read traffic signals, and to assess road conditions.

BlackBerry’s pivot toward autonomous driving emerges after putting a stop to directly manufacturing smartphones. The company announced it would stop directly producing its once-iconic devices and would license its technology to third-party manufacturers. It has already signed agreements with manufacturers in Indonesia and China, and is in talks with an Indian-based company.

BlackBerry QNX was first developed as a software platform aimed as part of the fundamental components of a power plant’s operating system, but has later become an integral part of a car’s “infotainment” system. The software is currently used in more than 60 million cars, including ones made by Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co.

BlackBerry put QNX into its own software division back in 2014 as the company looked to address the global markets for secure, reliable communications and embedded applications.

In October, BlackBerry and Ford signed a deal where the software firm was designated as a “Tier One” supplier for the auto maker. BlackBerry was also tapped by the Ontario government last month as one of three companies in a pilot program to test driverless cars on provincial roads.

BlackBerry and Trudeau Team Up on Self-Driving Car Research Center

The program doesn’t include any federal funding at this point, but it could in the future, said John Wall, head of QNX. Canadian governments already give hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies to traditional automakers and this deal could open the door for similar arrangements focused on technology and software, Wall said.
